DMACC BASEBALL TEAM CLOSES REGULAR SEASON WITH TWO WINS

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) baseball team closed out the regular season with a pair of victories against Dakota County Technical College (DCTC) May 7 at Rosemount, Minn.

 

The Bears took the opener, 7-0, and used an 11-run rally in the eighth inning to come away with a 16-5 decision in the second game. The two victories give DMACC a 28-25 record in David Pearson's first season as head coach.

 

Sophomore Nick Moffitt of West Des Moines and freshman Matt Krambeck of Omaha, Neb., had two hits apiece and freshman Noah Heitshusen of Williamsburg and sophomore Luke Fegen of West Des Moines drove in three and two runs respectively to lead DMACC in the first game. The Bears took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third and closed out the victory with five runs in the top of the sixth.

 

Three DMACC pitchers combined on a two-hitter in the win. Freshman Parker Sanburn of Kokomo, Ind., pitched the first two innings and struck out two batters. Sophomore Malik Moore of Waukee went three innings and earned his fifth win of the season against three losses. Moore allowed one hit and struck out three. Sophomore Jack Donahue of Marshfield, Wis., pitched the final two innings, allowing one hit and striking out two batters.

 

Freshman Andrew Penney of Fargo, N.D., had two hits and drove in five runs and freshman Christ Witzke of Humboldt had a pair of hits and four RBIs in DMACC's win in the second game. The Bears trailed 2-1 after two innings and 3-1 after three innings, but rallied for three runs in the top of the fourth to grab a 4-3 lead. DCTC tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fourth and added another run in the bottom of the fifth to gain a 5-4 advantage. DMACC tied it with a run in the sixth and then put the game away with its 11-run rally in the eighth.

 

Fegen Heitshusen, Krambeck and Moffitt also had two hits apiece in the win and Moffitt came away with a pair of RBIs.

 

Witzke threw the first three innings, allowing three runs on four hits with three strikeouts and a pair of walks. Freshman T.J. Fetters of Pleasant Hill pitched two innings and allowed one run on three hits. He struck out one and walked one. Freshman John Werner of Burlington also worked a pair of innings, surrendering one hit, striking out two and walking one and got the win to improve to 2-3 for the season. Freshman Moise Carrasco of Daytona, Fla., pitched the final inning, giving up two hits and striking out one batter.

 

The DMACC baseball team will face Kirkwood Community College (KCC) May 11 at Waterloo in the first round of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XI Division II Baseball Tournament. The Bears are the tournament's No. 5 seed and KCC is seeded fourth. DMACC won three of the four games played between the two teams this season.

 

The double elimination tournament continues through May 14 with the championship game slated for 3:30 p.m. on the 14th. A second championship game, if necessary, would be played at 11 a.m. on May 15.

 

The Region XI champion will advance to the NJCAA North Plains District Tournament May 20 and 21 at the home of the Region 13 champion. The North Plains District champion will move on to the NJCAA Division II Baseball World Series May 27 to June 2 at Enid, Okla.
