DMACC women's golf team finishes fifth in Plains District Championship

 

The DMACC women's golf team closed out the 2023-24 spring season with a fifth-place finish in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Plains District Championship April 28 and 29 at Mariah Hills Golf Course in Dodge City, Kan.

 

The Bears posted an 18-hole score of 350 in their second round and finished the 36-hole tournament with 690 strokes. DMACC finished 10 strokes behind Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) rival Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) but finished ahead of conference rivals Hawkeye Community College (HCC), North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) and Southeastern Community College (SECC).

 

Dodge City Community College (DCCC) won the team championship with 613 strokes and Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) was second at 620. IWCC's Baylie Pike took medalist honors with a three-over-par 145. Pike posted rounds of 72 and 73 over the par 71 layout.

 

Freshman Anne van Hemert of Eindhoven, Netherlands, led DMACC with a 36-hole score of 167 on rounds of 83 and 84. She tied for 16th in the individual competition. Sophomore Erin Winker of Carroll tied for 19th, sophomore Meg Thompson of Greene finished in 24th place and freshman Annie Burns of Algona tied for 25th. Winker posted an 88 in the second round to go with an 82 in the first round and came away with 170 strokes. Thompson turned in a 90 in the second round and finished with 176 strokes and Burns closed at 177 after an 88 in the second round.

 

DMACC freshman Lilly Houtakker of Solon did not play the first round and shot 98 in the second round. Freshman Alexis Barber of Newell shot a 97 in the first round and did not play the second round.
