Jones' late basket lifts DMACC Women's Basketball team past ILCC, 68-66

Covid-19 sophomore Camry Jones of Okoboji took a pass from freshman Jaden Ainley of Clear Lake and scored with five seconds to play as the DMACC women's basketball team defeated Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC), 68-66, December 12 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Freshman Rebekah Fuller of Bondurant then assured the Bears of the victory with a steal as time ran out.

 

Ainley, Jones and Fuller all scored in double figures for DMACC, which improved to 6-5 overall and 1-2 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC). Ainley led the way with 17 points and Jones and Fuller scored 15 and 13 points respectively. Freshman Jensen Archibald of Martinsdale also reached double figures with 11 points.

 

ILCC, coached by former DMACC assistant women's basketball coach Ashley Martin, got a team-high 17 points from Brielle Bartelt.

 

DMACC led throughout the game. The Bears were up 17-13 at the end of the first quarter and led 35-22 at halftime. DMACC had a 51-42 advantage at the end of the third quarter. ILCC responded by outscoring the Bears 24-17 in the final period that created the exciting finish.

DMACC shot 43 percent in the win, making 23 of 54 field goal attempts. The Bears were 6-of-19 from three-point range and 16-of-20 from the free throw line.

 

ILCC finished with a 33-31 advantage on the boards with Jones and Fuller leading the Bears with seven rebounds apiece. Sophomore Reagan Franzen of Polk City added five rebounds for DMACC.

 

Ainley led the Bears in steals with three and Fuller had two steals and two blocked shots.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will play Kirkwood Community College (KCC) December 17 at Cedar Rapids. KCC is 9-0 for the season and 3-0 in the ICCAC. The Eagles are the defending national champions in Division II of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and are the top-ranked team in this week's NJCAA Division II poll.
