DMACC softball team takes two from NIACC
  • DMACC belts seven doubles and seven home runs in the two wins

  • Freshman Delaney Milanowski has two home runs and drives in seven runs in the two wins

 

The DMACC softball team got a no-hitter from sophomore pitcher Courtney Donahue of Marshfield, Wis., and hit seven doubles and seven home runs in sweeping a doubleheader from North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) April 8 at the DMACC softball diamond. The Bears won by scores of 9-0 and 9-1 and both games were called after five innings because of the mercy rule.

 

With the wins, DMACC, ranked 11th in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), improved to 25-7 overall and 8-2 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

Donahue improved to 13-2 in winning the opener. In addition to keeping the Trojans hitless, she struck out 13 batters and walked two. The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, led 2-0 after two innings and 4-0 after three innings. They closed out the win with five runs in the fifth inning.

 

Donahue got support from sophomore Elle Nelson of Grimes and freshman Hilary Wilson of Solon who had three hits apiece and freshman Delaney Milanowski of Spring Green, Wis., who had two hits. All three belted home runs and Wilson and Milanowski drove in three runs apiece and Nelson came away with two RBIs. Freshman Josie McCuddin of Truro also homered for the Bears, Wilson added a pair of doubles and Nelson had one.

Wilson got the Bears on the scoreboard in the first with an RBI double and McCuddin homered in the second for a 2-0 lead. Wilson had a two-run home run in the third to make it 4-0 and Milanowski ended the game with three-run home run in the fifth. Nelson hit a two-run home run earlier in the inning.

 

NIACC took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in the second game and a run-scoring single by sophomore Campbell Kelley of Rock Island, Ill., and a NIACC error got the Bears a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning. They closed out the win with four runs in the third and three in the fourth. Milanowski had a three-run home run in the third and Nelson and Wilson hit solo home runs in the fifth.

 

Sophomore Kinsley Robertson of Tiffin went the distance and improved to 8-3 with the win. She allowed one run on five hits, struck out nine and walked two.

 

The DMACC softball team will face Ellsworth Community College (ECC) in a doubleheader April 10 at the DMACC softball diamond. ECC is 15-17 overall and 5-5 in the ICCAC.
