DMACC softball team sweeps doubleheader from NECC

The DMACC softball team needed just 10 total innings to sweep a doubleheader from Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) April 4 at Norfolk, Neb.

With the wins, DMACC improved to 23-5 overall and 6-0 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC). The Bears have also put together a six-game winning streak.

DMACC, ranked ninth in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), won both games by identical 9-0 scores and both ended after five innings because of the mercy rule. Sophomore Courtney Donahue of Marshfield, Wis., pitched four hitless innings and struck out nine in running her record to 12-1 in the opener. Freshmen Hilary Wilson of Solon and Mia Walker of Fonda homered in DMACC's win in the second game. Sophomore Kinsley Robertson of Tiffin surrendered one hit and struck out five in getting her seventh win of the season against two losses.

The Bears used a four-run rally in the second inning and a five-run rally in the fourth inning in winning the first game. Sophomores Ceara Swanson of Lincoln, Neb., Elle Nelson of Grimes and Hannah Ironside of Swisher and freshman Breanna Caffery of Bettendorf drove in runs in the second inning and Swanson, sophomore Campbell Kelley of Rock Island, Ill., and freshman Josie McCuddin of Truro had run-scoring hits in the fourth. The Bears also scored a run on an NECC error in the fourth inning.

Sophomore Kelsey Palmer of Cedar Rapids and freshman Delaney Milanowski of Spring Green, Wis., led DMACC's 15-hit attack with three hits apiece and Caffery, Nelson and McCuddin had two hits apiece.

Sophomore Lauryn Foudree of West Des Moines pitched the fifth inning and completed the shutout, allowing one hit and walking one batter.

DMACC scored one run in the first and eight in the second in taking the second game. Wilson's sacrifice fly gave the Bears their 1-0 lead and she and Walker highlighted the eight-run second inning with two-run home runs. Sophomore Belle Nelson of Gilbert drove in two runs during the rally and Elle Nelson also had an RBI. The Bears got another run on an NECC error.

Robertson went the first three innings, allowing one hit and striking out five. Freshman Macy Blomgren of Waukee threw the last two innings. She struck out three batters and walked three.

The DMACC softball team will face Kirkwood Community College (KCC) in a doubleheader April 6 at the DMACC softball diamond. The Eagles, ranked 10th in the NJCAA Division II poll, are 18-10 overall and 3-1 in the ICCAC.
