DMACC softball team sweeps doubleheader from SWCC, 19-0 and 15-1

 

The DMACC softball team improved to 31-7 overall and 8-4 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) by sweeping a doubleheader from Southwestern Community College (SWCC) April 12 at the DMACC softball diamond.

 

Sophomore Maddy Kearns of Glenpool, Okla., and freshman Madisyn Kelley of Nora Springs drove in three runs apiece in a 19-0 win in the first game and freshman Ceara Swanson of Lincoln, Neb., and sophomore Kendal Clark of Humboldt homered in a 15-1 win in the second game.

 

DMACC, ranked ninth in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), used a 13-run rally in the second inning to get the win in the opener. The Bears led 3-0 after the first inning and were up 16-0 after the third inning. They closed out the victory with three runs in the bottom of the fourth.

 

Kelley and freshman Elle Nelson of Grimes homered in the victory, Clark blasted a triple, sophomore Emily Ades of Boone had a pair of doubles and freshman Amaya Snyder of Cedar Rapids doubled for the Bears. Kearns led the 17-hit attack with three hits and Ades, Clark, Kelley and sophomore Sydney Kennedy of Peosta had two hits apiece. Kennedy and freshman Kelsey Palmer of Cedar Rapids drove in two runs apiece.

 

Kennedy improved to 15-2 with the win. She threw the first three innings, allowing one hit and striking out four. Freshman Lauryn Foudree of West Des Moines pitched the final two innings, allowing one hit, striking out five and walking one.

 

The Bears used another second-inning rally to win the second game. They scored two runs in the first, went up 11-0 with nine runs in the second and closed out the win with four runs in the fourth. SWCC tallied its lone run in the top of the fifth.

 

DMACC extra-base hits in addition to the Swanson and Clark home runs included a triple by Nelson and doubles from Kearns, Snyder and freshman Grace Bailey of Hamilton. Clark drove in five runs and Swanson and Palmer had two RBIs apiece.

 

Freshman Courtney Donahue of Marshfield, Wis., pitched the first three innings and notched her eight win of the season against one loss. She allowed one hit and walked one batter. Freshman Kelsey Robertson of Tiffin threw the final two innings, allowing one run on four hits. She struck out two batters.

 

The DMACC softball team will play Kirkwood Community College (KCC) in doubleheaders April 14 and 17 at Cedar Rapids. KCC, which is ranked 12th in NJCAA Division II, leads the ICCAC with a 16-0 record. The Eagles are 33-10 overall.
