DMACC softball team gets three wins on Kansas trip

The DMACC softball team improved to 15-3 and ran its winning streak to six consecutive games following a three-game sweep of Neosho County Community College (NCCC) and Allen County Community College (ACCC) March 15 at Chanute, Kan.

 

The Bears, ranked third in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), began the day with a 3-2 win over NCCC and then handed ACCC an 18-0 loss in five innings. DMACC closed out the tripleheader with another win over NCCC, 9-1.

 

Sophomore Sydney Kennedy threw a four-hitter and helped her own cause with two hits and a run batted in to lead DMACC past NCCC. The Bears trailed 1-0 after two innings before tying the game with a run in the top of fourth. Both teams scored in the sixth inning and DMACC got the win with a run in the top of the seventh.

 

Kennedy and sophomore Kendal Clark of Humboldt paced the Bears' eight-hit attack with two hits apiece, including a double by Clark, and sophomore Maddy Kearns of Glenpool, Okla., and freshman Amaya Snyder of Cedar Rapids drove in one run apiece.

 

Kennedy struck out 17 and walked three in improving to 7-2 for the season.

Snyder hit two home runs and drove in seven runs in the Bears' lopsided win over ACCC. DMACC took a 5-0 lead in the first inning and made it a 16-0 game with 11 runs in the second. The Bears closed out the win with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth.

 

In addition to Snyder's two home runs, DMACC got two hits apiece from sophomore Emily Ades of Boone and freshmen Madisyn Kelley of Nora Springs, Elle Nelson of Grimes, Maia Abrahamson of Van Meter and Kenzie Schon of Carroll. Ades had two doubles and Kearns, Nelson and Schon also doubled. Ades, sophomore Kaylynn Salyars of Muscatine, Kelley and Nelson drove in two runs apiece.

 

Freshman Courtney Donahue of Marshfield, Wis., threw three innings and allowed one hit, struck out three and walked one in staying unbeaten at 4-0. Freshman Lauryn Foudree of West Des Moines pitched two innings, allowing two hits and striking out four.

 

Kearns, Clark, Snyder and Nelson homered in DMACC's second win over NCCC. The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the first, made it a 2-0 game with a run in the fourth and closed out the win with three runs in the fifth and four in the sixth. NCCC scored its lone run in the bottom of the fifth.

 

Ades, Kearns, Kennedy and freshman Hannah Ironside of Swisher had two hits apiece with Kennedy and Ironside getting doubles and Kearns and Clark each drove in three runs.

 

Freshman Grace Bailey of Hamilton pitched the first three innings and earned her first decision of the season. She allowed four hits and struck out two. Donahue worked two innings, allowing one run on one hit with one strikeout and two walks and Kennedy threw one inning and struck out two batters.

 

The DMACC softball team will begin Iowa Community College Athletic Conference play with a four-game set against Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) March 20 and 21 at Norfolk, Neb. NECC is 4-4 this season.
