DMACC baseball team tops Iowa Lakes CC, 4-1

 

Freshman Sam Hesselmann of Johnston had a pair of base hits, including a double, and sophomore Jaylen Ziegler of Urbandale hit a solo home run as the DMACC baseball team closed out a three-game series against Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) with a 4-1 win April 29 at Estherville.

 

The win gave the Bears a sweep of the series and they improved to 28-21 overall and 16-13 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

DMACC led 1-0 after batting in the first inning and ILCC got a 1-1 tie with a run in the bottom of the inning. The Bears went ahead 2-1 with a run in the second and added their final two runs in the top of the fourth.

 

The Bears had just seven hits in the win, including three extra-base hits. Joining Hesselmann and Ziegler with extra base hits was sophomore Dillon Kuehl of Urbandale, who doubled.

 

Freshman Konner Entz of West Fargo, N.D. pitched the first five innings and got the win in his first decision of the season. He allowed one run on two hits, struck out five and walked two. Sophomore Alex Berends of Story City went four innings and earned his first save of the season. He allowed one hit and struck out eight.

 

The DMACC baseball team will face Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) in a single game on Wednesday at Boone. IWCC, a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I program, is 44-7 overall and 27-2 in Division I of the ICCAC. The Reivers are ranked fourth in the NJCAA Division I poll. They swept a doubleheader against DMACC by scores of 13-3 and 14-8 March 19 at Council Bluffs.
