DMACC baseball team splits doubleheader with IWCC

The DMACC baseball team ran its record to 27-23 overall and 16-14 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) after splitting a doubleheader with Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) May 3 at the DMACC baseball diamond.

 

Sophomore Brodie Kresser of Jesup and freshman Kannon Coakley of Maquoketa drove in two runs apiece and sophomore Gage Franck of Marion homered in DMACC's 13-3 win in the first game. IWCC came away with a 25-17 victory in the second game, a contest that went 12 innings and lasted just less than five hours.

 

Kresser had four hits, including a pair of doubles, and Coakley and freshman Jaylen Ziegler of Urbandale doubled in DMACC's win in the first game. The Bears took a 2-1 lead in the first inning, led 5-2 after four innings and closed out the win with five runs in the fifth and sixth in the sixth. Franck and Ziegler had two hits apiece in the win.

 

Freshman Ty Madison of Omaha, Neb., went all six innings and improved to 4-2 with the win. He allowed three runs on four hits, struck out five and walked one.

 

IWCC used an eight-run rally in the top of the 12th to come away with the win in the second game. The Reivers trailed 17-16 after seven innings and scored in the top of the eighth to send the game into extra innings.

 

Franck and freshman Dillon Kuehl of Urbandale had three hits apiece for DMACC and Coakley, sophomore Reed Stallman of Alburnett and freshman Maddox Johnston of Chanhassen, Minn., had two hits apiece. Coakley and Kuehl each homered and Franck and Johnston doubled. Coakley and Kuehl topped the Bears in RBIs with five apiece.

 

DMACC used nine pitchers in the game. Freshman Jacob Sjuts of Humphrey, Neb., pitched an inning and a third, allowing four runs on five hits and sophomore Drew Scherbenske of Rapid City, S.D., allowed three runs on four hits and struck out three in an inning and two-thirds. Freshman Kaleb Gengler of Sioux City allowed four runs on two hits, struck out one and walked two in two-thirds of an inning and freshman Thomas Leiden of Omaha, Neb., walked two of the three batters he faced but was not credited with any innings pitched.

 

Freshman Alex Berends of Story City gave up two runs on three hits and walked one batter in two-thirds of an inning and freshman Eli Lehrman of Anamosa surrendered three runs on three hits, struck out three and walked two in two innings on the mound. Freshman Zach Hoehn of Waseca, Minn., went two and a third innings, allowing one run on two hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Freshman Vinny Mauro of Norwalk also went two and a third innings, allowing five runs on four hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Mauro suffered the loss and fell to 2-2 for the season. Freshman Cooper Smith of Johnston threw the final inning for DMACC, allowing three runs on one hit.

 

The DMACC baseball team will close out the regular season with doubleheaders against Southwestern Community College (SWCC) May 6 and 7 at the DMACC baseball diamond. SWCC is 18-28 for the season and 10-20 in the ICCAC.
