DMACC's Chance Key named ICCAC Pitcher of the Week for Division II Baseball
  • Key earned a save with three scoreless innings against Johnson County Community College
  • Key retired nine consecutive batters, six via strikeout
  • Key has 18 strikeouts in 14 and a third innings this season

 

The Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) has named DMACC's Chance Key the ICCAC Athlete of the Week for Division II Baseball (pitching) for the week of March 13 to 19.

 

Key, a freshman from Waverly, is the third DMACC baseball player to be honored by the conference this spring. Sophomore pitcher Joe Husak of Cambridge has received the honor twice, the week of Jan. 27 to Feb. 5 and the week of Feb. 20 to 26. Freshman Mitch Cummins of Chanhassen, Minn., earned the honor the week of Jan. 27 to Feb. 5.

 

Key received the honor after pitching three scoreless innings in an 8-3 win over Johnson County Community College (JCCC) March 14 at Overland Park, Kan. JCCC was ranked ninth in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I poll at the time.

 

Key walked the first batter he faced on a 3-2 count, then retired the next nine batters, six by strikeout. The save was Key's second of the season in five overall appearances.

 

Key, who is tied for second in saves in the ICCAC, is 1-0 with a 3.14 earned run average. He has pitched 14 and a third innings, allowing six runs on seven hits. Five of the runs have been earned. Key has struck out 18 batters, walked six and is averaging 11.3 strikeouts per nine innings.
