DMACC baseball team edges Southwestern, 5-3

 

Covid-19 sophomore (CoSO) Jack Luster of Huxley drove in two runs and freshmen Jake Brill of Maple, Wis., Brodie Kresser of Jesup and Sam Holling of Waukesha, Wis., had one RBI apiece to lead the DMACC baseball team to a 5-3 win over Southwestern Community College (SWCC) April 21 at the DMACC baseball diamond.

 

The Bears improved to 29-13 with the win. They are 15-6 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

DMACC trailed 1-0 after SWCC scored a run in the top of the fifth but the Bears rallied for three runs in the bottom of the inning for a 3-1 lead. SWCC tied it with two runs in the seventh and DMACC broke the tie with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth to come away with the win.

 

Luster and Covid-19 freshman (CoFR) Jake Thilges of Johnston paced DMACC's 10-hit attack with two singles apiece and freshman Reed Stallman of Alburnett added a double.

 

The Bears used six pitchers in the win. CoSO Ray Ray Douglas of Sioux City pitched the first two and a third innings, allowing a pair of hits, striking out three and walking one. Freshman Dale Stout went two-thirds of an inning and freshman Cooper Smith of Johnston worked three innings. He allowed two runs on two hits, struck out two and walked one. Freshman Drew Scherbenske of Rapid City, S.D., threw one inning allowing one run and one walk and Dixon recorded one strikeout in one inning on the mound. Freshman Simon Gregersen earned his seventh save of the season, recording two strikeouts in an inning of work.

 

The DMACC baseball team will face Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) in a three-game set April 23 and 24 at Council Bluffs. The two teams will play a doubleheader on April 23 and a nine-inning single game on April 24. IWCC, a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I program, is 33-8 overall and 18-3 in the ICCAC. The Reivers are ranked seventh in NJCAA Division I.
