DMACC baseball team drops three of four games against Butler

The DMACC baseball team fell to 8-7 for the season after dropping three of four games against Butler Community College (BCC) March 4 and 5 at El Dorado, Kan.

 

The two teams split a doubleheader on March 4 with BCC winning the opener, 6-5, and DMACC taking the nightcap, 9-7. BCC swept both games on March 5, winning by scores of 7-6 and 9-4.

 

Sophomore Jake Brill of Maple, Wis., belted a two-run home run and Covid-19 sophomore (CoSO) Jack Luster of Huxley added a solo shot for DMACC in its 6-5 loss in the first game on March 4.

 

The Bears trailed 4-1 after two innings but took a 5-4 lead with a run in the third and three in the fifth, highlighted by Brill's two-run homer. BCC responded with single runs in the bottom of the fifth and seventh innings to come away with the win. CoSO Jackson Fisher of Chariton accounted for another DMACC extra-base hit with a double.

 

Covid-19 freshman (CoFR) Kaleb Krier of Altoona pitched the first five innings for DMACC, allowing five runs on eight hits. He struck out three and walked one. Freshman Drew Scherbenske of Rapid City, S.D., pitched an inning and a third and suffered the loss. He allowed one run on one hit and walked two batters.

 

Luster had three hits, including a double and a home run, and drove in three runs to lead DMACC to its win in the second game. Fisher also homered in the game and freshman Reed Stallman of Alburnett had two hits, including a double, and drove in three runs. Freshman Brodie Kresser of Jesup also had a pair of hits for the Bears and drove in one run.

 

DMACC led 5-2 after four innings, 6-4 after five innings and 8-7 after six innings before scoring an insurance run in the top of the ninth.

 

CoFR Anthony Potthoff of Van Meter threw the first four and a third innings for DMACC and improved to 1-0 with the win. He allowed four runs on seven hits, struck out two and walked two. CoFR Jarrett Novak of Omaha, Neb., pitched one inning, allowing three runs on one hit with two strikeouts and a walk and CoFR Simon Gregersen of Ramsey, Minn., got the save behind an inning and a third on the mound. He allowed two hits and struck out four.

 

BCC used three-run rallies in the fifth and sixth innings to come away with a 7-6 win in the first game on March 5. Stallman led DMACC with three hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Brill homered and drove in two runs and CoFR Jake Thilges of Johnson had two hits, including a double.

 

CoFR Jacob Draeger of Johnston pitched the first five innings for DMACC, allowing four runs on eight hits. He struck out seven and walked one. CoFR Greg Ryun of Victoria, Minn., pitched a third of an inning, allowing two runs on one hit and walking one batter and Gregersen suffered the loss in two-thirds of an inning on the mound. He allowed one run on two hits and struck out two batters.

 

BCC scored three runs in the first, two in the second and four in the fourth to come away with the win in the second game on March 5.

 

DMACC, which scored two runs in the first and one each in the second and third innings, got a pair of hits from Brill, including a home run, and two singles from freshman Gage Franck of Marion. Each drove in one run.

 

CoFR Jackson Stewart of Urbandale started for DMACC, went two innings and suffered the loss. He allowed five runs on eight hits, struck out two and walked one. CoFR Jacob Norris of North Liberty also went two innings, allowing four runs on two hits with four strikeouts and two walks. CoFR Ben Dixon of Sioux City threw one inning, allowing one hit and striking out one batter and CoSO Bret Price of Boone struck out two and walked one in one inning on the mound.

 

The DMACC baseball team is idle until March 16 when the Bears open the home season with a doubleheader against Century College. The first game will start at 1 p.m.
