DMACC baseball team splits four games on Oklahoma trip

The DMACC baseball team ran its record to 7-3 with a split of four games February 26 and 27 at Enid, Okla.

 

The Bears opened with a 3-0 win over Northern Oklahoma College-Enid (NOCE) on Feb. 26 and the lost the second game, 3-2. On Feb. 27, DMACC defeated NOCE 16-6 and dropped a 20-3 decision to Seminole State College (SSC) in its second game of the day.

 

Covid-19 freshman (CoFR) Kaleb Krier of Altoona and CoFR Simon Gregersen of Ramsey, Minn., combined on a two-hitter to lead DMACC past NOCE in the opener on Feb. 26. Krier notched his first win of the season on a one-hitter and six strikeouts over six innings and Gregersen earned his first save of the season behind one hit and one strikeout in one inning.

 

DMACC was limited to four hits in the win, singles by sophomore Jake Brill of Maple, Wis., and Covid-19 sophomore Jack Luster of Huxley, a double by freshman Reed Stallman of Alburnett and a triple from CoFR Jake Thilges of Johnston. Stallman, Luster and CoFR Jayden Singleton of Des Moines drove in runs for the Bears, who scored two runs in the first and one in the seventh.

 

NOCE overcame a 2-0 DMACC lead with a run in the bottom of the sixth and two in the bottom of the seventh to win the second game.

 

DMACC had just four hits in the game, singles by Singleton, Brill, freshman Mitchell Cummings of Chanhassen, Minn., and Cy Patterson of Council Bluffs. Cummings had the Bears' only RBI in the game.

 

CoFR Anthony Potthoff of Van Meter pitched the first five and two-thirds innings, allowing one run on two hits. He struck out four and walked three. CoFR Jarrett Novak of Omaha, Neb., went two-thirds of an inning, allowing two runs on two hits and striking out two batters and Covid-19 sophomore (CoSO) Bret Price of Boone suffered the loss in a third of an inning. He allowed one hit.

 

Brill, CoSO Jackson Fisher of Chariton and Singleton hit three hits apiece and freshman Gage Franck of Marion, CoFR Tre Mungin of Omaha, Neb., and freshman Brodie Kresser of Jesup had two hits apiece in DMACC's win in the opener on Feb. 27. Brill, Franck and Singleton drove in three runs apiece and Fisher and Kresser had two RBIs each. Kresser homered in the win, Brill hit a pair of triples, Franck had two doubles and Fisher also doubled.

 

DMACC led 5-2 after four innings and 11-6 after six innings. The Bears put the game out of reach with five runs in the top of the seventh.

 

CoFR Jacob Draeger of Johnston went five and a third innings and earned his first win of the season. He allowed three runs on five hits, struck out seven and walked four. Freshman Drew Scherbenske of Rapid City, S.D., pitched a third of an inning and struck out one and freshman Luke Fordyce of Waterloo worked one inning, allowing one hit and walking one batter.

 

Patterson and freshman Sergio Lira Ayala of Nappannee, Ind., each doubled in DMACC's loss to SSC in the closer on Feb. 27. The Bears trailed 7-2 after five innings and SSC put the game away with 13 runs in the top of the seventh.

 

CoFR Jacob Norris of North Liberty started for DMACC and went three innings, He allowed five runs on three hits, struck out four and walked three. CoFR Ben Dixon of Sioux City went an inning, allowing two runs on one hit, striking out three and walking two and CoSO Cade Van Ness of Glenwood struck out two and walked one in one inning on the mound. Freshman Brady Latcham of Pekin surrendered five runs on four hits without recording an out and CoSO Cole Kaufman of Waukee gave up two runs and walked two batters without recording an out. CoSo Blake Grevengoed of West Des Moines allowed five runs on two hits, struck out one and walked two in a third of an inning and freshman Cooper Smith of Johnston allowed one run on two hits in two-thirds of an inning.

 

The DMACC baseball team was scheduled to play Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa (NOCT) today at Tonkawa, Okla.
