DMACC women's basketball team wins two games in Great Western Classic

 

The DMACC women's basketball team improved to 3-3 for the season with a pair of wins in the Great Western Classic November 18 and 19 at Fort Dodge.

 

Freshman Rebekah Fuller of Bondurant scored a team-high 14 points as the Bears ended a three-game losing streak with a 61-53 decision over Highland (Ill.) Community College (HCC) in their tournament opener on Nov. 18. Freshman Jaiden Ainley of Clear Lake and sophomore Reagan Franzen of Polk City came away with 18 points apiece as DMACC defeated Elgin Community College (ECC), 103-58, on Nov. 19.

 

The Bears overcame a 19-15 first-quarter deficit en route to their win over HCC. DMACC gained a 33-33 tie at halftime and then outscored the Cougars 28-20 in the second half to come away with the win.  The Bears led 46-43 at the end of the third quarter.

 

Freshman Jensen Archibald of Martensdale joined Fuller in double figures with 11 points. Covid-19 sophomore (CoSO) Camry Jones of Okoboji, Ainley, Franzen and freshman Hallie Mohr of Morning Sun scored seven points apiece in the win.

 

The Bears shot 33 percent in the win, making 24 of 72 field goal attempts. They were just 1-of-19 from three-point range and made 12 of 23 free throw attempts.

 

Jones had 12 rebounds to lead DMACC to a 46-35 advantage on the boards. Fuller had eight rebounds and Franzen and freshman Kennedy Jones of Oak Park, Ill., finished with five apiece. Jones led the Bears in assists and steals with four each and Archibald and Ainley had three assists apiece.

 

DMACC opened up a 26-14 advantage at the end of the first quarter and never looked back in defeating ECC. The Bears had a 54-27 lead at halftime and were ahead 82-43 at the end of the third quarter.

 

Freshman Reanna Hutchinson of Eau Claire, Wis., joined Ainley and Franzen in double figures with 16 points. Archibald and sophomore Jadeyn Smith of Arcadia scored nine points apiece and Jones finished with eight points.

 

DMACC shot 55 percent in the win, connecting on 37 of 67 field goal attempts. The Bears were 10-of-18 from three-point range and 18-of-26 from the free throw line. Franzen was 6-of-10 from the field, including 3-of-5 from three-point range and she made both of her free throw attempts. Hutchinson was 5-of-7 from the field, including 2-of-3 from three-point range. She was a perfect 4-of-4 at the free throw line.

 

The Bears finished the game with 53 rebounds. Franzen led the way with six and Fuller, Jones and CoSO sophomore Lexi Branning of Manning had five rebounds apiece. Ainley led DMACC in assists with seven and Smith had a team-high three steals.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will play Black Hawk-Moline Community College (BHMCC) Nov. 22 at Moline, Ill. The Braves are 5-3 with four wins in their last five games.
