DMACC women's basketball team drops two games in Kirkwood Classic

The DMACC women's basketball team fell to 1-3 for the season with a pair of losses in the Kirkwood Classic November 11 and 12 at Cedar Rapids.

 

The Bears lost to Illinois Central College (ICC), 72-58, on Nov. 11 and dropped a 74-65 decision to the Mount Mercy University junior varsity (MMUJV) on Nov. 12.

 

ICC, ranked 14th in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, used a 14-point advantage in the third period to hand the Bears the loss. ICC led 18-12 at the quarter, 31-26 at halftime and 59-40 at the end of the third quarter.

 

Freshman Jaden Ainley of Clear Lake led the Bears with 20 points and freshman Rebekah Fuller of Bondurant added 10.

 

DMACC shot 33 percent in the loss, making 19 of 58 field goal attempts. The Bears were just 4-of-20 from three-point range and 16-of-23 from the free throw line.

 

ICC had a 42-24 advantage on the boards with Covid-19 sophomore (CoSO) Camry Jones of Okoboji pulling down six rebounds and Fuller getting five to lead DMACC. Freshman Kennedy Jones of Oak Park, Ill., led the Bears in assists with three and Jones had a team-high four steals.

 

MMUJV had a 43-38 advantage at halftime and a 59-52 lead at the end of the third quarter end route to its win over DMACC.

 

Freshman Jensen Archibald of Martensdale and Jones led the Bears with 16 and 15 points respectively.

 

DMACC shot 37 percent, hitting 22 of 59 field goal attempts. The Bears made just one of 21 three-point attempts and were 18-of-26 from the free throw line.

 

MMUJV outrebounded the Bears, 32-29, with Ainley's eight rebounds and seven from Jones topping DMACC. Ainley led the Bears in steals with three and sophomore Reagan Franzen of Polk City had a pair of assists.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will play in the Great Western Classic Nov. 18 and 19 at Fort Dodge. The Bears will face Highland (Ill.) Community College on Nov. 18 and will play Elgin Community College (ECC) on Nov. 19.
