DMACC women's basketball team splits two games in Bank of Valley Classic

The DMACC women's basketball team began the 2022-23 season in the Bank of Valley Classic November 3 and 4 at Columbus, Neb., and came away with a win and a loss.

 

Sophomore Jensen Archibald scored 19 points as the Bears opened the season with a 60-58 win over Southeast (Neb.) Community College (SECC) on Nov. 3 and she had 18 points in a 68-65 loss to Central (Neb.) Community College (CCC) on Nov. 4.

 

Covid-19 sophomore Camry Jones of Okoboji made two free throws with four seconds left in regulation to lift DMACC to its win over SECC. The game was close all the way with DMACC trailing 17-14 at the end of the first quarter, 30-29 at halftime and 44-43 at the end of the third quarter. DMACC was down 58-56 with 40 seconds left before tying the game on a pair of free throws by freshman Jaden Ainley of Clear Lake. Ainley then came up with a steal with 10 seconds to play, setting up the free throws by Jones.

 

Freshman Rebekah Fuller of Bondurant and Jones joined Archibald in double figures with 14 and 12 points respectively.

 

DMACC shot 41 percent in the win, hitting 22 of 54 field goal attempts. The Bears were 5-of-23 from three-point range and 11-of-19 from the free throw line.

 

Jones grabbed six rebounds to lead DMACC to a 25-22 advantage on the boards. Ainley topped the Bears in assists with three and in steals with four.

CCC got a pair of free throws by Makenna Pelster with 24 seconds to play to come away with its win over DMACC on Nov. 4. The Bears had a 46-30 advantage at halftime but were outscored 21-9 in the third period and 17-10 in the fourth quarter in suffering the loss. Ainley joined Archibald in double figures with 12 points as DMACC slipped to 1-1 for the season.

 

The Bears shot 38 percent, making 24 of 63 field goal attempts. They were 6-of-35 from three-point range and 9-of-16 from the free throw line.

 

DMACC came away with a 33-27 advantage on the boards with Jones and Fuller getting six rebounds apiece to lead the Bears. Archibald topped DMACC in assists with three and in steals with two.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will play in the Kirkwood Classic Nov. 11 and 12 at Cedar Rapids. The Bears will play Illinois Central College (ICC) on Nov. 11 and will face John Wood Community College (JWCC) on Nov. 12. ICC is ranked ninth in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II preseason poll.
