DMACC women's basketball team advances to Region XI quarterfinals with 86-74 win over SWCC

 

Freshman Reagan Franzen of Polk City and Covid-19 freshman (CoFR) Emily Caspers of Swaledale recorded double-doubles as the DMACC women's basketball team defeated Southwestern Community College (SWCC), 86-74, February 27 at Creston to advance to quarterfinals of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XI Division II Basketball Tournament.

 

Franzen had 23 points and 13 rebounds and Caspers scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Bears improved to 15-16 for the season with their second win of the season against the Spartans. CoFR Magan Christopherson of Milford contributed 22 points to DMACC's victory.

 

The Bears trailed 21-16 at the end of the first quarter and 36-32 at halftime before grabbing a 55-54 advantage at the end of the third quarter. They outscored SWCC 31-20 in the fourth period to come away with the win.

 

 DMACC shot 43 percent in the win, hitting 24 of 56 field goal attempts. The Bears were 8-of-20 from three-point range and 30-of-35 from the free throw line.

 

SWCC had a 43-38 advantage on the boards with Franzen and Caspers leading DMACC. CoFR Camry Jones had six rebounds and Christopherson and freshman Payton Tahahwah of Tama dished out five assists apiece with CoFR Lexi Branning of Manning getting four. Franzen led the Bears in steals with two.

The DMACC women's basketball team, seeded ninth, will face top-seeded Kirkwood Community College (KCC) in the Region XI quarterfinals March 8 at Cedar Rapids. The Eagles are 29-1 with a 20-game winning streak and are the top-ranked team in the NJCAA Division II poll. Their season includes two wins over DMACC, 71-46 Dec. 8 at Cedar Rapids and 77-30 Feb. 23 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

The DMACC-KCC winner will play the winner of the Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC)-North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) matchup in the semifinals March 5 at the home of the highest seeded team remaining in the tournament. The championship game will be played March 6 at the home of the highest seeded team remaining in the tournament.

 

The Region XI champion will advance to the NJCAA Division II Women's National Tournament March 15 to 19 at Port Huron, Mich.
