Christopherson leads DMACC women's basketball team past SWCC, 81-71

 

Covid-19 (CoFR) freshman Magan Christopherson of Milford led four players in double figures with 26 points as the DMACC women's basketball team defeated Southwestern Community College (SWCC), 81-71, February 19 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

CoFR Emily Caspers of Swaledale had 17 points, freshman Jadeyn Smith of Arcadia scored 14 and CoFR Camry Jones of Okoboji added 13 as the Bears improved to 14-16 overall and 6-17 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) with one of their most complete wins of the season.

 

DMACC trailed 16-9 at the end of the first quarter but had leads of 32-31 at halftime and 52-51 at the end of the third quarter. They outscored the Spartans 29-20 in the fourth quarter to come away with the victory and avenge a 71-60 loss to SWCC Jan. 8 at Creston.

 

DMACC shot 43 percent in the win, connecting on 35 of 82 field goal attempts. The Bears were 7-of-33 from three-point range and 4-of-6 from the free throw line.

 

Freshman Reagan Franzen of Polk City pulled down 10 rebounds to lead DMACC to a 54-32 advantage on the boards. Caspers narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds, Smith and Jones had eight apiece and Christopherson finished with seven. Freshman Payton Tahahwah of Tama led the Bears in assists with seven and Christopherson topped DMACC in steals with two.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will close out the regular season against Kirkwood Community College (KCC) Feb. 23. Game time is 5:30 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. KCC is 28-1 overall, 19-0 in the ICCAC and is riding a 15-game winning streak. The Eagles defeated DMACC 71-46 when the two teams played Dec. 8 at Cedar Rapids.
