Loss to Kirkwood ends season for DMACC women's basketball team

Kirkwood Community College (KCC) defeated the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's basketball team, 74-33, March 4 at Cedar Rapids in the National junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Region Women's Basketball Championship, ending the season for the Bears.

 

DMACC closed the campaign at 10-20.

 

KCC, ranked fourth in the NJCAA Division II poll and seeded second in the tournament, recorded its third victory of the season against DMACC. The Eagles led throughout the game. They were ahead 17-7 at the end of the first quarter, 39-12 at halftime and 59-27 at the end of the third quarter.

 

Freshman Jada Powell of Des Moines led DMACC with 11 points and six rebounds. Sophomore Bethany Evans of West Des Moines scored six points and sophomore Hannah McKinney of Des Moines finished with five points.

 

The Bears shot 27 percent in the loss, making 14 of 52 field goal attempts. They were 4-of-24 from three-point range and 1-of-5 from the free throw line.

 

KCC had a 48-18 advantage on the boards with Powell's six rebounds leading DMACC. Sophomore Taelor Lessmeier of Fort Dodge led the Bears in assists with two and freshman Shamir Brown of Tuscaloosa, Ala., had two steals.

 

KCC advances to the Region XI semifinals March 7 at Mason City, where the Eagles will face fourth-seeded Southeastern Community College (SECC). Top-seeded North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) and fifth-seeded Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) will meet in the other semifinal game. The championship game will be played March 8 at Mason City.

 

The Region XI champion advances to the NJCAA Division II Women's Basketball Championship March 17 to 21 at Port Huron, Mich.
