DMACC women's basketball team downed by ILCC, 55-42

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's basketball team fell to 10-17 overall and 4-10 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) following a 55-42 loss to Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) February 19 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Sophomore Taelor Lessmeier of Fort Dodge led DMACC with 10 points and sophomore Asia Mena of Chicago, Ill., added nine points.

 

DMACC led 16-14 at the end of the first quarter and 23-20 at halftime. The Bears had a 36-35 advantage at the end of the third quarter, but were outscored 20-6 in the fourth period.

 

Mena hit a pair of two-point baskets early in the fourth quarter, the last of which gave DMACC a 40-37 lead. ILCC answered with an 18-0 run to open up a 55-40 lead and putting the game out of reach.

 

DMACC shot 24 percent, making 15 of 62 field goal attempts. The Bears were 8-of-35 from three-point range and 4-of-6 from the free throw line.

 

ILCC had a 58-31 advantage on the boards with freshman Jada Powell of Des Moines pulling down 11 rebounds to lead DMACC. Sophomore Hannah McKinney of Des Moines topped the Bears in assists with three and Mena and freshman Riley Gatton of Montezuma had two assists apiece. McKinney also led DMACC in steals with three and Powell had three blocked shots.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will close out the home portion of the 2019-20 schedule Feb. 22 when the Bears host Iowa Central Community College (ICCC). Game time is 1 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. ICCC is 15-12 overall and 6-7 in the ICCAC. The Tritons defeated DMACC, 67-61, when the two teams played Jan. 19 at Fort Dodge.
