DMACC women's basketball team falls to Southwestern CC, 80-50

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's basketball team's losing streak stretched to five games January 25 when the Bears dropped an 80-50 decision to Southwestern Community College (SWCC) inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

The loss sent the Bears to 8-12 overall and 2-6 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

Sophomore Taelor Lessmeier of Fort Dodge led DMACC with 12 points and freshman Shamir Brown of Tuscaloosa, Ala., came off the bench to score eight points.

 

SWCC led throughout the game. The Spartans were up 26-12 at the end of the first quarter, 43-27 at halftime and 59-31 at the end of the third quarter.

 

DMACC shot 24 percent in the loss, making 17 of 71 field goal attempts. The Bears were 7-of-39 from three-point range and 9-of-14 from the free throw line.

 

DMACC came away with 42 rebounds and sophomore Hannah McKinney of Des Moines led the Bears with eight rebounds. Sophomore Asia Mena of Chicago, Ill., and freshman Jada Powell of Des Moines added six rebounds apiece. Mena dished out three assists and McKinney finished with three steals.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team faces Marshalltown Community College (MCC) tonight at Marshalltown. The Tigers, a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I program, are 5-15 overall and 0-2 in Division I of the ICCAC. MCC defeated DMACC 68-64 when the two teams played in the Emerson Classic Nov. 15 at Marshalltown.
