DMACC women's basketball team falls to Black Hawk-Moline, 73-69

Freshman Jada Powell of Des Moines scored 16 points and grabbed 20 rebounds, including 16 defensive rebounds, as the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's basketball team dropped a 73-69 decision to Black Hawk College-Moline (BHCM) November 26 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Freshman Riley Gatton of Montezuma scored 12 points, freshman Katie Scott of Polk City had 11 and sophomore Asia Mena of Chicago, Ill., came away with 10 as the Bears fell to 4-6 for the season.

 

DMACC led 28-23 at the end of the first quarter and had a 46-36 advantage at halftime. The Bears led 60-54 at the end of the third quarter.

 

DMACC shot 37 percent in the loss, hitting 26 of 70 field goal attempts. The Bears were 9-of-26 from three-point range and 8-of-14 from the free throw line.

 

Powell's 20 rebounds and 13 from freshman Katelyn Courtney of Ames lifted DMACC to a 51-38 advantage on the boards. Mena, freshman Shamir Brown of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and sophomore Cailey Schaa of Council Bluffs dished out three assists apiece and Mena topped the Bears in steals with three.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will open Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play Dec. 4 against Ellsworth Community College (ECC). Game time is 5:30 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. ECC is 0-9 for the season.
