The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's basketball team defeated Little Priest Tribal (LPT), 71-58, Feb. 27 at Winnebago, Neb., and then suffered an 88-78 setback to North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) Feb. 28 at Mason City.

The split gives the Bears a 15-13 record for the season, including a 10-5 record in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

Sophomore Aliyah Robinson scored 22 points and freshman Shailece Porter of Walthill, Neb., added 15 in DMACC's win over LPT. The Bears led 20-15 at the end of the first quarter and 36-29 at halftime. They had a 55-45 lead at the end of the third quarter.

DMACC shot 36 percent in the win, hitting 24 of 66 field goal attempts. The Bears were 9-of-20 from three-point range and 14-of-24 from the free throw line.

Sophomore Grace Stalzer of Zearing grabbed 12 rebounds as LPT came away with a 52-47 advantage on the boards. Porter had nine rebounds and Robinson and sophomore Ellie Horn of Newton had six rebounds apiece. Freshman Asia Mena of Chicago, Ill., led DMACC in assists with six and Robinson dished out four. Mena led the Bears in steals with four and Porter came away with three.

Robinson tallied 20 points, Mena had 15 and Stalzer and sophomore Emma Rouse of Boone scored 11 and 10 respectively in DMACC's loss to NIACC. The Trojans, who came into the game ranked second in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, overcame a first-half deficit to defeat DMACC for the second time this season. The Bears led 36-23 at the end of the first quarter and 48-45 at halftime. The game was tied at 71 at the end of the third quarter.

DMACC shot 48 percent, draining 27 of 56 field goal attempts. The Bears were 10-of-17 from three-point range and 14-of-21 from the free throw line.

DMACC had a 49-45 advantage in rebounding with Stalzer getting 12 rebounds to record a double-double. Horn came away with 10 rebounds and Porter had six. Porter, Mena and Robinson dished out five assists apiece and Mena and Robinson had three steals apiece.

The DMACC women's basketball team closes out the regular season March 2 against Iowa Central Community College (ICCC). Game time is 1 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. ICCC is 16-12 overall and 7-8 in the ICCAC. DMACC defeated the Tritons, 80-72, Jan. 26 at Fort Dodge.
