DMACC women's basketball team tops SECC for sixth straight win

Sophomore Ellie Horn recorded a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds as the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) ran its winning streak to six consecutive games with a 73-64 win over Southeastern Community College (SECC) February 16 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Freshman Shailece Porter of Walthill, Neb., tallied 15 points, sophomore Aliyah Robinson of Waterloo scored 14 and freshman Sameria Jackson of Houston, Texas, came away with 10 as the Bears improved to 14-11 overall and 9-3 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

DMACC led 23-20 at the end of the first quarter and 39-37 at halftime. The Bears outscored SECC 19-9 in the third period to open up a 58-46 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

 

DMACC shot 41 percent in leveling its two-game series with SECC. The Bears were 28-of-69 from the field, including 7-of-16 from three-point range. They made 10 of 16 free throw attempts.

 

Horn's 14 rebounds lifted DMACC to a 55-51 advantage on the boards. Sophomore Grace Stalzer of Zearing had 12 rebounds to go with seven points and Jackson and Robinson grabbed seven rebounds apiece. Freshman Asia Mena of Chicago, Ill., dished out a team-high five assists and Porter had four assists and four steals. Robinson added three steals.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will be home to Kirkwood Community College (KCC) Feb. 20 inside the DMACC gymnasium. Game time its 5:30 p.m. KCC, ranked seventh in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), is 22-6 overall and 12-1 in the ICCAC. The
