Mena, Porter lead DMACC women's basketball team past ECC, 88-59

Freshmen Asia Mena of Chicago, Ill., and Shailece Porter of Walthill, Neb., combined for 39 points to lead the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's basketball team to an 88-59 win over Ellsworth Community College (ECC) January 19 at Iowa Falls.

 

Mena scored 20 points and Porter added 19 as the Bears improved to 8-10 overall and 3-3 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC). DMACC sophomore Aliyah Robinson of Waterloo also reached double figures with 14 points.

 

The Bears had a 24-7 lead at the end of the first quarter, grabbed a 53-23 advantage at halftime and held a commanding 73-39 lead at the end of the third quarter.

 

DMACC shot 51 percent in the win, hitting 35 of 69 field goal attempts, including 11 of 28 three-point attempts. The Bears were 7-of-19 from the free throw line.

 

DMACC had a 48-31 advantage in rebounding with Robinson's eight rebounds leading the Bears. Freshman Sameria Jackson of Houston, Texas, had seven rebounds and sophomore Grace Stalzer of Zearing came away with six. Mena and Porter also lead DMACC in assists with five apiece and Jackson had a team-high five steals.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will face the Briar Cliff University junior varsity Jan. 21 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
