Mitchell, Horn Lead DMACC Women past ECC, 66-63

Sophomore Molly Mitchell of Okoboji scored 21 points and freshman Ellie Horn of Newton added 10 points as the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's basketball team handed Ellsworth Community College (ECC) a 66-63 loss February 10 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

The Bears overcame a 53-47 deficit at the end of the third quarter to improve to 19-6 overall and 6-2 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC). DMACC trailed 18-16 at the end of the first quarter, but gained a 29-29 tie at halftime.

 

The Bears shot 41 percent in the win, making 29 of 71 field goal attempts, including 2-of-16 from three-point range. They were 6-of-12 from the free throw line.

 

Mitchell recorded another double-double with 10 rebounds to lead DMACC to a 40-36 advantage on the boards. Sophomore Beth Atwood of Packwood had nine rebounds and freshman Deja Davis of Omaha, Neb., came away with eight rebounds. Sophomore Joniqua Clark of Cedar Rapids dished out seven assists to go with nine points and Davis led the Bears in steals with four. Clark and Atwood had three steals apiece.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will play Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) Feb. 16 at Estherville. DMACC defeated the Lakers 57-55 when the two teams played Jan. 17 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
