Mitchell, Atwood, Clark Record Double-Doubles as DMACC Women #10 NIACC

Sophomores Molly Mitchell of Okoboji, Beth Atwood of Packwood and Joniqua Clark of Cedar Rapids recorded double-doubles as the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's basketball team upset North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC), 91-83, January 27 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Mitchell had a season-high 32 points and pulled down 17 rebounds, Atwood scored 11 points and grabbed 15 rebounds and Clark finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds as the Bears improved to 17-4 overall and 5-0 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) with their fifth consecutive victory. DMACC sophomore Regan Shockley of Hartley narrowly missed a double-double with 20 points and nine rebounds.

 

NIACC entered the game ranked 10th in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). DMACC is ranked 20th.

 

The Bears, who shot 44 percent in the win, led throughout the game. They had a 19-14 advantage at the end of the first quarter and held a 47-35 lead at halftime. A 24-14 run in the third quarter gave DMACC a commanding 71-49 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

 

The Bears drained 29 of 66 field goal attempts, including 5-of-18 from three-point range, and were 28-of-46 from the free throw line as NIACC was guilty of 31 fouls in the game. Mitchell made 11 of  13 field goal attempts and finished with 14 defensive rebounds. Thirteen of Atwood's 15 rebounds came on the defensive end of the floor as did nine of Clark's 10 rebounds. DMACC came away with a 70-44 advantage on the boards, including 52 defensive rebounds. Clark led the Bears in assists and steals with seven and three respectively.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team is home to Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) January 31. Game time is 5:30 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. ICCC is 10-11 overall and 2-3 in the ICCAC.
