The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) softball team defeated Southeastern (Neb.) Community College (SENEB) 10-0 and 10-2 May 15 at the DMACC softball diamond to win the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) District G championship and advance to the NJCAA Division II Softball Championship for the sixth consecutive season and the seventh time in the past eight seasons.

Freshman Josie Swafford of Wellston, Okla., tossed a four-hitter and drove in three runs on a pair of hits to lead DMACC in the opener and freshman Morgan Lewis of Cedar Rapids drove in three runs to lead the Bears in the second game. The opener was called after five innings because of the mercy rule and the second game ended after six innings, also because of the mercy rule.

Sophomore Avery Guy of Cedar Rapids and Ellie Dixon of Iowa City had three hits apiece for DMACC in the opener. The Bears took a 4-0 lead in the first and padded their advantage with two runs each in the second, third and fourth innings.

Sophomore Mia Ruther of Burlington and freshman Maddie Karr of Center Point joined Swafford with two hits apiece and Guy had a pair of RBIs. DMACC extra-base hits included doubles by Swafford, Karr, Dixon and Lewis.

Swafford improved to 25-1 with the win. In addition to allowing four hits, she struck out 11 and did not issue a walk.

Lewis drove in three runs and Guy and Swafford each drove in two runs for DMACC in the second game. The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the first and led 6-1 after four innings. They were up 9-2 after five innings and closed out the win with a run in the sixth.

Ruther, Swafford and sophomores Kaisha Wells of Topeka, Kan., and Jayci Vos of Monroe had two hits apiece and Ruther and Dixon collected one RBI apiece. Extra base hits included two doubles by Swafford and one by Wells and a triple from Lewis.

Freshman Ally Anderson of Atlantic pitched the first four and a third innings and came away with the win. She allowed two runs on three hits, struck out two and walked one. Swafford worked an inning and two-third and struck out four batters.

The 2019 NJCAA Division II Softball Championship will be held May 22 to 25 at Clinton, Miss.
