DMACC's Josie Swafford named ICCAC DII Pitcher of the Week for the second consecutive week

The Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) has named Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) softball player Josie Swafford the ICCAC Division II Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 29 to May 5.

 

Swafford, a freshman from Wellston, Okla., received the honor for the second consecutive week and for the sixth time this season. She was also named ICCAC Division II Pitcher of the Week for the weeks of March 4 to 10, March 11 to 17, March 25 to 31 and April 8 to 14.

 

Swafford is one of three DMAC softball players honored by the conference this season. Sophomore Mia Ruther of Burlington was named DII Athlete of the Week for the week of March 25 to 31 and freshman Maddie Karr of Center Point received the honor for the weeks of March 4 to 10 and March 11 to 17.

 

Swafford pitched the Bears to a 7-0 win over Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) and an 8-0 win over Southwestern Community College (SWCC) during the week, helping DMACC to its second consecutive ICCAC regular-season championship. She allowed three hits, struck out 10 and walked one in the win over ICCC and allowed one hit, struck out nine and walked one against SWCC. Swafford improved to 21-1 for the season with the two wins.

 

Swafford entered the week ranked third nationally in earned run average at 1.01 and lowered her ERA to 0.91 behind the two shutouts. She leads the ICCAC in ERA, is second in wins and second in strikeouts with 194.

 

Swafford has pitched 138 and a third innings this season, allowing 22 runs (18 earned runs) on 70 hits. She has walked 34 batters and is averaging 9.83 strikeouts per seven innings. She also has three saves.

 

Swafford has also helped the Bears offensively with a .415 batting average, a .491 on-base percentage and a .638 slugging percentage. She has 39 hits in 94 at-bats, including eight doubles, two triples and three home runs. She has driven in 37 runs and scored 29 runs.
