Bariffe-Smith leads DMACC men's basketball team past MCC, 84-49

Sophomore Demarion Bariffe-Smith of Skokie, Ill., scored 14 points to lead the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) men's basketball team to an 84-49 win over Marshalltown Community College (MCC) November 30 at Marshalltown.

 

Sophomore Jal Bijiek of Des Moines recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds and freshman Ryan Schmitt of Van Meter came away 11 points as the Bears improved to 8-2 for the season.

 

DMACC, ranked 12th in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), led 42-29 at halftime. The Bears shot 41 percent from the field, making 26 of 64 field goal attempts. They were 10-of-32 from three-point range and 22-of-25 from the free throw line.

 

Bijiek's 10 rebounds helped DMACC to a 40-27 advantage on the boards. Sophomore Zach Lester of Clear Lake and freshman Willie Guy of Cedar Rapids had six rebounds apiece and Guy topped the Bears in assists with three. Lester led the way in steals with six.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team opens the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) season against Ellsworth Community College (ECC) Dec. 4 inside the DMACC gymnasium. Game time is 7:30 p.m. ECC is 6-3 for the season.
