Five DMACC baseball players earn all-region honors

The Iowa Community College Athletic Association (ICCAC) has released the names of those conference baseball players named to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XI-All Region Baseball Team and the list includes five members of the DMACC baseball team.

 

First-team honors went to freshman Reed Stallman of Alburnett, Covid-19 freshman (CoFR) Jake Thilges of Johnston and freshman Simon Gregersen of Ramsey, Minn. Stallman was honored as the designated hitter, Thilges as an outfielder and Gregersen as a pitcher.

 

Freshman Brodie Kresser of Jesup earned second-team honors as an infielder and CoFR Jackson Stewart of Urbandale earned honorable mention recognition as a pitcher.

 

Stallman hit .459 in conference games with an on-base percentage of .543, both in the top five in Division II of the ICCAC. He had the third most hits in the conference with 51 in 32 conference games.

 

Overall, Stallman led DMACC in hitting with a .418 average. He had a .505 on-base percentage and a .627 slugging percentage. Stallman collected 74 hits in 177 at-bats, including 16 doubles, three triples and five home runs. He drove in 40 runs and scored 43 runs.

 

Thilges was second to Stallman in hitting with a .387 average. His on-base percentage was .483 and he had a .705 slugging percentage. Thilges' 67 hits in 173 at-bats included 18 doubles, five triples and a team-leading nine home runs. Thilges also led the Bears in runs batted in with 53 and he scored 35 runs. Thilges' 18 doubles were the fourth most in the conference and he finished second in the league in triples.

 

Gregersen had the best season of any relief pitchers in the ICCAC, compiling a 6-3 record and seven saves. Gregersen, who had an earned run average of 1.85, threw 39 innings and allowed 12 runs on 30 hits. Eight of the 12 runs allowed by Gregersen were earned. He struck out 57 batters, walked 17 and averaged 13.15 strikeouts per nine innings.

 

Kresser hit .337 with a .451 on-base percentage and a .529 slugging percentage. He had 63 hits in 187 at-bats, including 15 doubles and seven home runs. Kresser drove in 46 runs and scored 62 runs.

 

Stewart was 4-2 for the season with a 6.75 earned run average and one complete game. He pitched 52 innings and allowed 43 runs on 54 hits. Thirty-nine of the 43 runs allowed by Stewart were earned. Stewart struck out 62 batters, walked 22 and averaged 10.73 strikeouts per nine innings.

 

The DMACC baseball team finished the season at 36-22 overall and 20-13 in the ICCAC. The Bears entered the double-elimination NJCAA Region XI Baseball Tournament as the No. 3 seed and reached the championship bracket championship game where they dropped a 14-13 decision to Kirkwood Community College (KCC). Southeastern Community College (SECC) then defeated DMACC 9-6 in an elimination game, ending the Bears' season with a third-place finish in the tournament.
