DMACC baseball team sweeps doubleheader from MCC

 

The DMACC baseball team improved to 19-10 overall and 7-3 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) following a doubleheader sweep of Marshalltown Community College (MCC) April 6 at the DMACC baseball diamond.

 

The Bears took the opener, 9-3, behind a three-run home run by freshman Brodie Kresser of Jesup in the fourth inning. Covid-19 freshman (CoFR) Jake Thilges of Johnston drove in six runs in a 15-5 decision in the second game.

 

DMACC never trailed in winning the opener. The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the first, added four runs in the second and three in the fourth for an 8-2 advantage. They closed out the win with a run in the bottom of the fifth. CoFR Nick Ripa of Papillion, Neb., had a double and a triple and drove in one run. Freshman Jake Brill of Maple, Wis., and Covid-19 sophomore (CoSO) Jack Luster of Huxley each doubled and drove in one run apiece. CoSO Jackson Fisher of Chariton and freshman Gage Franck of Marion also drove in one run apiece.

 

CoFR Jackson Steward of Urbandale pitched the first six innings and improved to 3-2 with the win. He allowed three runs on four hits, struck out eight and walked four. CoSO Cade Van Ness of Glenwood threw one inning and struck out two batters.

 

CoFR Jack Thilges had three hits, including a double, and drove in six runs to lead DMACC in the second game. The Bears trailed 3-1 after the first inning, 3-2 after the second inning and 5-4 after the third inning but took charge of the game with two runs in the fourth, five in the fifth, three in the sixth and one in the seventh.

Kresser, Ripa and Franck had two hits apiece and Kresser, Franck and freshman Cy Patterson of Council Bluffs drove in two runs apiece.

 

CoSO Bret Price of Boone pitched the first four innings for the Bears, allowing five runs on four hits. He struck out four and walked two. CoFR Ben Dixon of Sioux City went two innings and improved to 2-0 with the win. He allowed one hit, struck out four and walked two. Freshman Thomas King of West Des Moines also threw two innings, allowing one hit with four strikeouts and a walk.

 

The DMACC baseball team will play Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) in a three-game series April 9 and 10 at Fort Dodge. The two teams will play a doubleheader on April 9 and a nine-inning single game on April 10. ICCC is ranked tenth in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). The Tritons are 25-6 overall and 6-2 in the ICCAC.
