DMACC baseball team drops doubleheader to Kirkwood CC

Kirkwood Community College (KCC) ended a nine-game winning streak by the DMACC baseball team by sweeping a doubleheader April 2 at the DMACC baseball diamond.

 

The Eagles, ranked fifth in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, took the opener, 3-2, on a home run in the seventh inning, and collected 14 hits in a 15-4 decision in the second game. The loss in the opener ended DMACC's nine-game winning streak and the Bears fell to 17-9 overall and 5-2 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) behind both losses.

 

KCC took the opener on a solo home run by Chase Moseley in the top of the seventh. The Eagles took a 2-0 lead with runs in the third and fourth innings and DMACC tied it with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth.

 

Freshman Reed Stallman of Alburnett led the Bears with three hits, including a solo home run in the sixth, and one RBI. Covid-19 freshman (CoFR) Jake Thilges of Johnston and Covid-19 sophomore (CoSO) Jackson Fisher of Chariton hit doubles for the Bears and freshman Brodie Kresser of Jesup drove in the other DMACC run.

 

CoFR Kaleb Krier of Altoona went the distance for the Bears and suffered his first loss of the season after four consecutive wins. Krier allowed three runs on eight hits, struck out seven and walked one.

 

KCC used six-run rallies in the first and third innings and scored three times in the fifth to take the second game. DMACC tallied three runs in the bottom of the first and scored a run in the bottom of the second to make it a 6-4 game before the Eagles pulled away in the third.

 

Stallman, freshmen Cy Patterson of Council Bluffs and Gage Franck of Marion had two hits apiece for DMACC and Kresser and Patterson drove in two runs apiece. DMACC extra-base hits included doubles by Kresser and Franck and a triple by freshman Jake Brill of Maple, Wis.

 

DMACC used eight pitchers in the game with the loss going to starter Jacob Draeger of Johnston, who is 0-1 for the season. He pitched an inning and a third, allowing six runs on seven hits with one strikeout and one walk, Only three of the runs allowed by Draeger were earned. CoFR Ben Dickson of Sioux City went two-thirds of an inning, allowing four runs on two hits with two strikeouts and two walks and CoFR Jarrett Novak of Johnston allowed one run and walked one batter but was not credited with any innings pitched.

 

Freshmen Brady Latcham of Pekin and Cooper Smith of Johnston, CoFR Greg Ryun of Victoria, Minn., freshman Dale Stout of Waukee and CoSO Cade Van Ness of Glenwood went one inning apiece. Latcham allowed one run on one hit and struck out one batter and Smith allowed two runs on three hits with one strikeout. Ryan gave up one run on one hit, struck out two and walked one and Stout struck out two and walked one. Van Ness retired all three batters he faced.

 

DMACC and KCC will play a nine-inning single game today at the DMACC baseball diamond. Game time is 2 p.m.
