DMACC baseball team begins conference play with sweep of NIACC

The DMACC baseball team began Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play with a sweep of three games against North Iowa Area Community College March 25 and 27 at the DMACC baseball diamond.

 

The Bears took both ends of a doubleheader on March 25 by scores of 6-3 and 5-3 and came away with another 5-3 win on March 27 behind a three-run home run by freshman Gabe Franck of Marion in the bottom of the eighth.

 

Freshman Reed Stallman of Alburnett hit a three-run home run in the second inning and Covid-19 sophomore Jackson Fisher of Chariton drove in two runs with a sacrifice fly in the first and a solo home run in the fifth to lead DMACC in the opener on March 25. The Bears led 2-0 after the first inning, 5-0 after the second inning and 6-2 after five innings.

 

Freshmen Cael Boever of Sioux City and Brodie Kresser of Jesup had doubles for DMACC.

 

Covid-19 freshman (CoFR) Kaleb Krier of Altoona pitched the first five innings for DMACC, allowing three runs on three hits. He struck out eight and walked one. Freshman Simon Gregersen of Ramsey, Minn., went two innings and earned his fifth save of the season. He allowed one hit and struck out four.

 

DMACC trailed 3-1 after three innings and 3-2 after four innings before getting the win behind a three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh.

 

Freshman Jake Brill of Maple, Wis., led the Bears with three hits including a double and a triple and freshman Mitchell Cummins of Chanhassen, Minn., and Kresser hit doubles. Brill and Fisher drove in runs in the bottom of the seventh and Brill scored the third run on a balk.

 

CoFR Jacob Draeger of Johnston pitched the first two and two-thirds innings for DMACC, allowing three runs on four hits. He struck out three and walked four. CoFR Greg Ryun of Victoria, Minn., went an inning and a third, striking out one and walking one and CoFR Jarrett Novak of Omaha, Neb., walked two batters in an inning and a third. CoFR Ben Dixon of Sioux City got his first win of the season behind three and two-thirds innings on the mound. He allowed one hit, struck out two and walked three.

 

Two DMACC runners scored on wild pitches in the seventh and Franck's three-run home run in the eighth gave the Bears a 5-3 win and a sweep of the three-game series on March 27. CoFR Jack Thilges of Johnston opened seventh inning with a base hit and moved around on a balk and two wild pitches. Cummins reached base after being hit with a pitch and moved around on three wild pitches.

 

In the DMACC eighth, Fisher reached base on a fielder's choice and took second on a walk to Covid-19 sophomore (CoSO) Jack Luster of Huxley. CoFR Sam Nicolino of Des Moines pinch ran for Luster and he and Fisher scored on Franck's homer to left field.

 

Thilges led DMACC's five-hit attack with a pair of singles.

 

CoFR Anthony Potthoff of Van Meter pitched the first seven innings for DMACC, allowing three runs on two hits. He struck out nine and walked one. Gregersen went two innings and improved to 2-1 with the win. He allowed two hits, struck out three and walked one.

 

The DMACC baseball team will play Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) today at the DMACC baseball diamond. ILCC is 8-7 overall and 3-0 in the ICCAC.
