DMACC baseball team sweeps four-game series against North Central Texas College

The DMACC baseball team ran its record to 5-1 behind a four-game sweep of North Central Texas College (NCTC) February 11 and 12 at Gainesville, Texas.

 

The Bears recorded 7-6 and 14-12 wins in a doubleheader on Feb. 11 and added 5-4 and 7-2 wins in the two games played on Feb. 12 to close out a six-game road trip to Oklahoma and Texas at 5-1. DMACC began the trip with a 1-1 split against Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa on Feb. 10.

 

Covid-19 sophomore (CoSO) Jackson Fisher of Chariton, CoSO Jack Luster of Huxley, sophomore Jake Brill of Maple, Wis., and freshman Reed Stallman of Alburnett had two hits apiece in DMACC's 7-6 win in the opener on Feb. 11.

 

The Bears scored six of their seven runs in the first inning, highlighted by a three-run home run from Covid-19 freshman (CoFR) Tre Mungin of Omaha, Neb., and added another run in the second. NCTC scored single runs in the third and fifth innings and tallied four runs in the sixth.

 

Brill, Luster and CoFR Jayden Singleton of Des Moines each doubled in the win and Singleton came away with two RBIs.

 

CoFR Kaleb Krier of Altoona pitched the first five and two-thirds innings and got the win. He allowed six runs on nine hits, struck out three and walked three. CoFR Jarrett Novak of Omaha, Neb., pitched an inning and a third, allowing one hit and striking out two batters.

 

Mungin belted a two-run home run in the third inning and added another RBI on a fielder's choice in the seventh as DMACC came away with a 14-12 win in the second game on Feb. 11.

 

DMACC led 6-5 after five innings and went up 7-5 with a run in the top of the sixth. The Bears extended their advantage to 14-5 with seven runs in the seventh and NCTC answered with a seven-run rally in the bottom of the inning to close to within 14-12.

 

Mungin and freshman Gage Franck of Marion led the Bears with two hits apiece and Franck, Stallman and Luster drove in two runs each. Freshmen Brodie Kresser of Jesup and Mitchell Cummins of Chanhassen, Minn., each doubled in the win.

 

CoFR Jackson Stewart of Urbandale pitched the first four and a third innings for DMACC and notched the victory. He allowed five runs on five hits, struck out five and walked five. CoFR Greg Ryun of Victoria, Minn., threw an inning and two-thirds, allowing six runs on five hits. He struck out three and walked one. Freshman Drew Scherbenske of Rapid City, S.D., went an inning and two-thirds, allowing a run on two hits and walking one batter.

CoFR Jake Thilges of Johnston hit three doubles, Brill had a pair of singles and Kresser drove in a pair of runs as DMACC recorded a 5-4 win in the opener on Feb. 12. The Bears trailed 4-3 after three innings and got a 4-4 tie with a run in the top of the fifth. They went ahead in the top of the seventh when Luster reached on an error, moved to third on a double by Thilges and scored on Mungin's sacrifice fly.

 

CoFR Jacob Draeger of Johnston pitched the first five innings for DMACC, allowing four runs on six hits. He struck out eight and walked three. Novak went two-thirds of an inning, allowing one hit, striking out one batter and walking one. CoFR Simon Gregersen of Ramsey, Minn., got the win behind an inning and a third on the mound. He allowed one hit and struck out two batters.

 

Freshman Cy Patterson of Council Bluffs had three hits, including a double, and Cummins, Franck and CoFR Sam Nicolino of Des Moines had two hits apiece, including a triple by Nicolino, as the Bears closed out the series with a 7-2 win in the second game on Feb. 12.

 

DMACC led all the way, scoring a run in the first, two in the second, one run each in the third and fourth innings and two in the fifth.

 

CoFR Nick Ripa of Papillion, Neb., and freshman Sergio Lira Ayala of Nappannee, Ind., drove in two runs apiece with Ayala's two RBIs coming on a home run in the fifth.

 

CoSO Bret Price of Boone got the win behind a five-hitter over four innings. He allowed two runs, struck out five and walked one. Freshman Brady Latcham of Pekin picked up the save with three innings on the mound. He allowed two hits, struck out five and walked two.

 

The DMACC baseball team is idle until Feb.25 and 26 when the Bears travel to Enid, Okla., to face Northern Oklahoma College-Enid (NOCE).
