The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) baseball team garnered a split with Indian Hills Community College (IHCC) in its final two games before a suspension ended all Iowa community college athletic competition for a three week period. The suspension, caused by the COVID-19 virus, began March14 and continues through April 3.
The doubleheader was played at the DMACC baseball field with IHCC taking the opener, 4-0. The Bears took the nightcap, 3-1, as sophomore Logan Ymker of Sioux Falls, S.D., allowed just two hits over six and two-thirds innings.
Freshman Carter Bornemeier of Elmwood, Neb., hit two singles and sophomores Dylan Voves of Mason City and Grant Bohling of Lincoln, Neb., and freshmen Cadyn Schwabe of Thompson, N.D., and Nolan Kelliher of Middleton, Wis., had one single apiece in the Bears' loss in the opener. IHCC, which had 11 hits in the game, got the win behind a pair of runs in the second and one each in the fifth and seventh innings.
Freshman Ray Ray Douglas of Sioux City pitched the first inning for DMACC, allowing one hit and striking out one batter. Freshman Gannon Manfull of Cambridge worked the second inning and suffered the loss in his first decision of the season. He allowed two runs on three hits and struck out one batter. Sophomore Nathaniel Gorczyca of Omaha, Neb., threw the last five innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out six batters.
Freshman Kyle Westhoff of West Des Moines had a pair of doubles and freshman Kaleb Harrison of Neola hit two singles to pace the Bears in their win in the second game. DMACC scored one run in each of the second, fifth and sixth inning and IHCC tallied its lone run in the top of the seventh.
Voves, Kelliher, Bornemeier, sophomore Elijah Rude of Hudson, Wis., and freshman Nolan While of Beatrice, Neb., each singled in the win and Voves, White and Bornemeier drove in one run apiece.
Ymker allowed one run, struck out seven and walked four in improving to 1-0 for the season. Sophomore Cole Schumacher of Bennington, Neb., pitched a third of an inning and walked one of the two batters he faced.
