The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) baseball team lost both games of a doubleheader against Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) March 11 at Council Bluffs.

IWCC, a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I program, won by scores of 12-5 and 6-2. DMACC, an NJCAA Division II program, fell to 4-10 for the season.

Sophomore Kaleb Harrison of Neola had three hits, including a double, and sophomores Dylan Voves of Mason City and Grant Bohling of Lincoln, Neb., and freshmen Cadyn Schwabe of Thompson, N.D., and Jackson Fisher of Chariton had two hits apiece for DMACC in the opener. Bohling had a pair of doubles and Fisher also doubled and drove in a pair of runs.

DMACC took a 1-0 lead in the first and IWCC responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning and three in the second for a 5-1 advantage. DMACC made it a 5-3 game with a pair of runs in the third, but IWCC answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to increase its advantage to 8-3. The Reivers put the game away with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. DMACC tallied single runs in the fifth and seventh innings.

Sophomore Will Moritz of West Des Moines pitched the first five innings for DMACC and fell to 0-3 with the loss. He allowed eight runs on 10 hits, struck out two and walked one. Sophomore Keaton Duckett of Johnston surrendered two runs and walked one batter and was not credited with any innings pitched and freshman Bret Price of Boone allowed two runs on two hits and walked one batter in one inning on the mound.

Fisher belted a home run and Schwabe and freshman Ben Nippolt of St. Paul, Minn., each doubled for DMACC in the second game. Fisher and Bohling drove in one run apiece for the Bears.

DMACC scored single runs in the second and third innings and IWCC rallied for three runs in the bottom of the second, one in the fourth and two in the fifth.

Sophomore Kolton Scherbenske of Rapid City, S.D., went the distance and suffered his second loss of the season against one victory. He allowed six runs on five hits, struck out five and walked two.

The DMACC baseball team faces another NJCAA Division I program today and March 13 when the Bears face Indian Hills Community College (IHCC). The two teams will play a single game today at Centerville and will meet in a doubleheader March 13 at the DMACC baseball diamond.
