DMACC baseball team takes doubleheader from Central JV

Sophomore Tavien Gillette of Rock Island, Ill., homered in each game and drove in six runs in the opener and freshman Isaac Nelson of Sioux Falls, S.D., blasted two home runs in the nightcap as the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) baseball team swept a doubleheader from the Central College junior varsity (CCJV) April 24 at the DMACC baseball diamond.

The Bears took the opener, 13-3, and won the second game, 11-1, to improve to 30-13 for the season. The first game was called after six innings because of the mercy rule and the second game ended after five innings, also because of the mercy rule.

DMACC was limited to just six hits in winning the first game, but took advantage of seven walks and four CCJV errors to come away with the win. The Bears led 3-0 after two innings, 4-1 after three innings and put the game away with five runs in the fifth and four runs in the sixth.

Gillette accounted for one of DMACC's two extra-base hits with his home run and freshman Ben Bryant of Fargo, N.D., doubled for the Bears' other extra- base hit and had a pair of RBIs. Gillette drove in one run with a sacrifice fly in the second, had another RBI with a bases-loaded walk in the fifth and belted a grand-slam home run in the sixth.

Freshman Garret Reisz of Council Bluffs threw three and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on two hits. He struck out five and walked three. Freshman Jonas Sanders of Fargo, N.D., pitched two and a third innings and got the win, his first of the season. He allowed three hits, struck out three and walked one.

Nelson, freshmen Carter Troncin of Urbandale, and T.J. Mahoney of Des Moines and sophomore Misael Sanchez of Allentown, Penn., had two hits apiece in DMACC's win in the second game. Troncin joined Nelson and Gillette with extra-base hits with a pair of doubles.

Troncin had four RBIs in the win, including a three-run double in the fourth, Nelson drove in three runs with a solo home run in the second and a two-run shot in the third, and Gillette and Sanchez had two RBIs apiece.

The Bears led 1-0 after two innings and pulled away with five runs in the third, three in the fourth and two in the fifth. CCJV scored its only run in the top of the fourth.

Sophomore Sam Laakso of Duluth, Minn., pitched three innings and improved to 1-0 with the win. He allowed one hit, struck out two and walked one. Freshman Cole Schumacher of Bennington, Neb., worked two innings, allowing one run on one hit. He struck out three and walked one.

The DMACC baseball team will play doubleheaders against Southeastern Community College (SECC) April 27 and 29 at West Burlington. DMACC leads the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) with a 15-5 record and SECC is second at 13-7. The Blackhawks are 34-12 overall.
