DMACC baseball team sweeps doubleheader from NIACC

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) baseball team improved to 16-9 for the season and 6-2 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) by sweeping a doubleheader from North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC), April 1 at the DMACC baseball diamond.

 

The Bears won by scores of 9-2 and 9-5.

 

DMACC had just three hits in winning the opener and got the win by taking advantage of five NIACC errors and nine walks. The Bears led 2-0 after two innings and 4-1 after three innings. They pulled away from a 4-2 advantage with four runs in the bottom of the fifth and added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.

 

Freshmen Dylan Voves of Mason City, Carter Troncin of Urbandale and Jonas Sanders of Fargo, N.D., had one hit apiece for DMACC, including a double by Troncin. Voves, sophomore Jacob Pinkerton of Beatrice, Neb., and freshman Ben Bryant of Fargo, N.D., drove in one run apiece.

 

Sophomore Spencer Hanson of West Des Moines pitched the first five innings and ran his record to 4-1 with the win. He allowed two runs on five hits, struck out eight and walked four. Sophomore Jakob Richardson of Cave Creek, Ariz., pitched two innings and struck out four batters.

 

Sophomore Evan Salmon of Urbandale belted a three-run home run in the first inning and drove in another run after he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the eight as DMACC came away with the win in the second game.

 

The Bears took a 4-0 lead in the first and led 5-0 after two innings. NIACC clawed back with a run in the third, two in the fifth and then tied the game with a pair of runs in the sixth before DMACC pulled away with a run in the bottom of the sixth and three runs in the bottom of the eighth.

 

Voves paced the Bears' 10-hit attack with three hits and Troncin, Pinkerton and sophomore Morgan Holmes of Minneapolis, Minn., drove in one run apiece.

 

Sophomore Henry Ristvedt of Savage, Minn., started on the mound for DMACC and worked the first five innings. He allowed five runs on seven hits, struck out seven and walked two. Freshman Garret Reisz of Council Bluffs went two and two-thirds innings and picked up his second win against one loss. He allowed two hits, struck out four and walked four. Freshman Hayden Thomsen of Maple Grove, Minn., pitched one inning and earned his first save of the season after striking out all three batters he faced.

 

The DMACC baseball team will face Indian Hills Community College (IHCC) in a 9-inning game today at the DMACC baseball diamond. Game time is 2 p.m. IHCC, a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I program, defeated the Bears 14-13 in 10 innings March 27 at Centerville.
