DMACC baseball team sweeps doubleheader from Central JV

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) baseball team improved to 13-7 by sweeping a doubleheader from the Central College junior varsity March 26 at Pella.

 

Game scores were 20-0 and 18-0. The opener was called after five innings because of the mercy rule and the second game went seven innings despite a 15-0 DMACC advantage after five innings.

 

Freshman Carter Troncin of Urbandale had two base hits, including a double, and drove in six runs for the Bears in the opener. They took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, increased their advantage to 9-0 with a six-run second inning and made it 18-0 with nine runs in the third. DMACC closed out the win with a pair of runs in the fourth.

 

The Bears had just nine hits in the game, but benefitted from 17 walks by Central JV pitchers.

 

Sophomores Misael Sanchez of Allentown, Penn., and Roman Vega of Buffalo, Minn., joined Troncin with two hits apiece. Freshman T.J. Mahoney of Des Moines drove four runs and Sanchez finished with three. Sophomore Evan Salmon of Urbandale and freshmen Ben Bryant of Fargo, N.D., and Cort Olson of Scottsdale, Ariz., drove in two runs apiece.

 

Freshman Garrett Reisz of Council Bluffs pitched all five innings and improved to 1-1 with the win. He allowed three hits, struck out seven and walked one.

 

Bryant went 5-for-5 with a double and five RBIs to lead DMACC to its win in the second game. The Bears, who benefitted from 17 hits and 14 walks, took a 1-0 lead in the first, added five runs in the second, six in the fourth and three each in the fifth and sixth innings.

 

Salmon had three hits, including a double, and Sanchez, Troncin and Olson had two hits apiece. Freshman Matthew McGinley of Stillwater, Minn., collected four RBIs and Sanchez, Olson and freshman Jonas Sanders of Fargo, N.D., drove in two runs apiece.

 

Freshman Kaden Peterson of Luther allowed one hit over five innings and got the win in his first decision of the season. He struck out 11 and did not issue a base on balls. Freshman Keaton Duckett of Johnston worked one inning, allowing one hit, and sophomore Sam Laakso of Duluth, Minn., struck out one batter in one inning on the mound.

 

The DMACC baseball team will face North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) in a four-game series March 31 and April 1 at the DMACC baseball diamond. Game time each day is 1 p.m. DMACC is 3-1 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC). NIACC is 9-10 overall and 2-2 in league play.
