The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) baseball team came away with three wins during a four-game series against Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) May 4 and 5 at the DMACC baseball diamond.

The Bears dropped the opening game on May 4, 14-4, but rebounded with an 11-1 win in the second game. They swept both games on May 5, taking the opener by a 7-5 score and winning the nightcap, 14-4.

DMACC improved to 24-26 for the season and 10-16 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

Freshmen Austin Weiler of Olathe, Kan., and Tavien Gillette of Rock Island, Ill., belted home runs in DMACC's loss in the opener on May 4. Weiler hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the first to give the Bears a short-lived 4-1 lead and Gillette hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh. He also doubled in the game and was the only DMACC player to have more than one hit.

NECC answered Weiler's home run with six runs in the top of the second and coasted the rest of the way, scoring twice in the fourth, three times in the sixth and twice in the seventh.

Sophomore John Werner of Burlington suffered the loss, his fifth of the season against three wins. He pitched five innings, allowing nine runs on eight hits, struck out five and walked three. Freshman Carlos Eusebio of Coral Springs, Fla., pitched two innings, allowing five runs on five hits and walking one batter.

Sophomore Matt Krambeck of Louisville, Neb., hit a two-run homer and a two-run double to lead DMACC to its win in the second game on May 4. The game was called after five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule. Gillette, sophomore Jeremy Lovera of Allentown, Penn., and freshman Ramon Vega of Buffalo, Minn., had two hits apiece and Lovera drove in a pair or runs.

Freshman Spencer Hanson of West Des Moines went the distance for his sixth win of the season against two losses. He allowed one run on five hits, struck out five and walked one.

Weiler had two hits, including a home run, and drove in three runs to lead the Bears in the opener on May 5. Freshman Calen Schwabe of Thompson, N.D., also had a pair of hits in the game and Gillette drove in a pair of runs.

Freshman Nate Holliday of Muscatine pitched the first six innings and notched his first win of the season against two losses. He allowed four runs on six hits, struck out four and walked one. Sophomore Alec Holcomb of Owatonna, Minn., pitched one inning and recorded his first save of the season. He allowed one run on two hits and struck out two batters.

Murr, Krambeck and Lovera homered in DMACC's win in the final game of the series. The Bears, who led 5-2 after four innings and 5-4 after NECC scored twice in the top of the fifth, put the game away with nine runs in the bottom of the inning.

Krambeck had three hits in the win and Schwabe, Murr, Lovera and freshmen Jacob Pinkerton of Beatrice, Neb., and Denver Blinn of West Fargo, N.D., had two hits apiece.  Murr drove in three DMACC runs and Krambeck, Lovera, Pinkerton and Blinn had two RBIs apiece.

Freshman Henry Ristvedt of Savage, Minn., pitched the first four and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on six hits. He struck out three and walked one. Freshman Jakob Richardson of Cave Creek, Ariz., pitched a third of an inning and evened his record at 3-3 with the win. He allowed one run on one hit, struck out one batter and walked one.
