MICHAEL MELCHERT HIRED AS THE NEW DMACC HEAD MEN’S AND WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY COACH

Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) Athletics Director B.J. McGinn has announced the hiring of Michael Melchert as the school's men's and women's cross country coach.
 

Melchert is a native of Monticello, Iowa. He helped the Panthers to three state championships in four years and was the Class 2A State Champion his senior year. He then took his talents to the University of Iowa where he participated in both track and field and country.

For cross country, Melchert is in the all-time top 10 at Iowa for the 8K. In track, he claimed a Big 10 Championship as the anchor leg of the distance medley relay and was a regional qualifier. He was an Iowa Male Athlete of the Year Finalist. 

"I have always had a passion to coach track & field and cross country," Melchert said. "I hope to give student athletes the knowledge and training to go as far as they can in this sport." 

Melchert served as the middle distance assistant coach at Iowa City West High School in the spring of 2018.

Melchert was an All Big Ten Academic Award recipient.  He graduated from the University of Iowa in 2018 with a Health and Human Physiology degree. He has been working as an Exercise Specialist and in the Cardiac Rehab area of the Story County Medical Center in Nevada.    

Melchert and his wife, Madison, make their home in Johnston. They are the parents of Claire.
