DMACC women's cross country team finishes fourth in NJCAA Region XI Championship

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's cross country team came away with a fourth-place finish in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XI Championship October 25 at Ottumwa.

 

The Bears, led by Grace Stewart's 12th-place finish, scored 114 points in the meet. Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) took the team championship with 20 points and ICCC's Winrose Chesang won the individual competition with a time of 16 minutes, 41 seconds on the 5K course.

 

Stewart, a freshman from Perry, posted a time of 20:10 in finishing in 12th place.

 

Other DMACC results included a 16th-place finish by sophomore Elizabeth Belling of Grimes. Freshman Cindy Liera of LeGrand was 23rd, freshman Karima Kuku of Des Moines placed 30th, freshman Ashley Weringa of Algona was 33rd and sophomore Sabrina Ure of Panora was 38th.

 

Belling crossed the finish line in 20:46, Liera posted a time of 22:13, Kuku toured the course in 23:28, Weringa turned in a time of 24:09 and Ure finished in 27:23.

 

Stewart and Belling were named to the all-region team based on their finishes. Stewart was named to the 2019 All-Region Second Team and Belling received honorable mention recognition.

 

The DMACC women's cross country team will close out the season with its participation in the NJCAA Division I Women's Cross Country Championship Nov. 9 at Albuquerque, N.M.
