DMACC volleyball team closes regular season with 3-1 win over Ellsworth

The DMACC volleyball team closed out the 2022 regular season with a 3-1 win over Ellsworth Community College (ECC) October 26 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

The Bears, who defeated ECC for the second time this season, dropped the opening set, 23-25, but bounced back with sets wins of 25-20, 25-13, 25-17 to get the victory. DMACC closed the regular season at 21-14 overall and 6-3 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

DMACC will be the No. 3 seed in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XI-B Volleyball Tournament and will face Northeast (Neb.) Community College Oct. 29 inside the DMACC gymnasium. Match time is 1 p.m.

 

Freshman Coryl Matheny of Glenwood led the Bears past ECC with 17 kills and a .286 hitting percentage, getting those 17 kills from 42 attacks with five hitting errors. Freshman Eden Wilson of Conrad had 16 kills and hit .323 and freshman Haylee Hidlebugh of Adel came away with 10 kills and a .500 hitting percentage. The Bears hit .261 in the match, getting 52 kills from 138 attacks with 16 hitting errors.

 

Sophomore Sara Hansen of Hudson led DMACC in assists with 37 and sophomore Erin Bathie of Ames and freshmen Kenya Prescott of Carroll and Maddie Dunham of Nevada had three ace serves apiece. Prescott led the Bears in digs with 21 and Bathie and freshman Jerica Heintz of Polk City had 12 digs apiece. Freshman Karlee Timm of Victor topped DMACC in blocks with six block assists and Hansen finished with three.

 

DMACC and NECC faced each other once during the regular season with the Bears coming away with a 3-1 decision Oct. 12 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Kirkwood Community College (KCC) and North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) make up the other half of the Region XI-B bracket and will also play Oct. 29 at 1 p.m. at Cedar Rapids.

 

The Region XI-B semifinal winners will play Nov. 2 for the Region Xi-B championship. DMACC defeated NIACC 3-1 during the regular season and dropped a 3-1 decision to KCC, the Region XI-B No. 2 seed.
