Chloe Gilgen of West Harrison High School in Mondamin has signed a national letter of intent to attend Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) and play volleyball.

Gilgen is the third commitment to the DMACC volleyball program for the 2020-21 school year. Other commitments include Morgan Tupper of Nevada High School and Emma McKinney of South Central Calhoun High School.

Gilgen said she chose DMACC because the school offers everything she has been looking for in a college.

"I grew up in a small school and DMACC is just the right size for me," Gilgen said. "DMACC is competitive in all of its athletics and is one of the top teams in(the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference). Attending DMACC will help me grow as a volleyball player and become even more knowledgeable about the game. I hope to be able to help the team achieve its goal of getting back to the national tournament."

Gilgen plans to enroll in DMACC's dental hygiene program.

"By playing (volleyball) at DMACC, I'll be able to build the necessary foundation to prepare myself for the dental hygiene program," Gilgen said.

West Harrison was 14-15 in Gilgen's senior season of volleyball. She led the Hawkeyes in kills with 259 and hit .325, getting those kills from 567 attacks with 75 hitting errors. Gilgen also led her team in ace serves with 66. Her season also included 11 assists, 218 digs and 30 blocks, including 17 solo blocks.

Gilgen has been a four-year starter in volleyball at West Harrison High School. She has been named to the all-conference team all four years, earning honorable mention as a freshman, being named to the second all-conference team as a sophomore and junior and being named to the first all-conference team as a senior. Gilgen is a two-year captain of the volleyball team. As a senior she was named to the Class 1A Southwest District Team and was the KMA Radio Rolling Valley Conference Senior of the Year.

Gilgen has also played softball throughout her high school career, helping the Hawkeyes to the state tournament in 2016. She was named to the all-conference first team last season.

Gilgen has also competed in basketball and track at West Harrison High School. She has been named to the school honor roll and is a member of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) and 4-H.
