DMACC volleyball team splits four matches in Johnson County Volleyball Challenge

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) volleyball team came away with a pair of wins and a pair of losses in the Johnson County Volleyball Challenge September 28 and 29 at Overland Park, Kan.

 

The Bears recorded identical 3-1 wins over Central (Neb.) Community College (CCC) and North Platte Community College (NPCC) on Sept. 28 and dropped 3-1 and 3-0 decisions to Johnson County Community College (JCCC) and Fort Scott Community College (FSCC) respectively on Sept. 29.

 

The split gives DMACC a 15-7 record for the season.

 

Sophomore Madison Paulsen of Council Bluffs had 20 kills and freshman Amber Dilsaver of Fort Madison added 14 to lead the Bears to a 25-21, 22-25, 25-22, 25-21 win over CCC in DMACC's first match of the tournament. Sophomores Peyton Parker of La Porte City and Lacey Clark of Bettendorf contributed nine and eight kills respectively to the win.

 

The Bears, ranked 18th in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), hit .258, getting 64 kills from 159 attacks with 23 hitting errors.

 

Sophomore Gill Tupper of Nevada led DMACC in assists with 29 and freshman Cailey Schaa of Council Bluffs had 25. Freshman Keimoney Lang of Iowa City topped DMACC in digs with 23, Paulsen had 18 and Tupper, Schaa and freshman Daiton Martin of Essex had 15 apiece. Dilsaver contributed five block assists to the win and Clark had four block assists.

 

Parker's 14 kills led DMACC to a 13-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-14 win over NPCC. Clark added nine kills and Paulsen and Dilsaver finished with eight apiece as the Bears had a .313 hitting percentage in the match. They finished with 47 kills from 99 attacks with 16 hitting errors.

 

Tupper had 41 assists and two ace serves in the win and Lang finished with 20 digs. Paulsen had 13 digs, Parker came away with 11 and Martin added 10. Dilsaver had six blocks, including four block assists, and Parker, Clark and freshman Kenzie Justice of North Liberty had three block assists apiece.

 

Parker had 15 kills, Paulsen contributed 11 and Clark finished with nine as DMACC dropped a 19-25, 22-25, 25-21, 21-25 decision to JCCC, the No. 1-ranked team in the NJCAA Division II poll.

 

DMACC hit .190 in the loss, getting 46 kills from 137 attacks with 20 hitting errors.

 

Tupper led the Bears in assists with 39 and also had three ace serves. Lang led five players in double figures in digs with 20. Martin finished with 17, Paulsen had 14, Tupper came away with 12 and freshman Carissa Smith of Monmouth, Ill., had 10. Dilsaver finished with seven blocks, including six block assists, and Justice had five blocks, including four block assists.

 

Paulsen and Parker had six kills apiece and Clark finished with five in DMACC's 17-25, 16-25, 18-25 loss to FSCC. Tupper came away with a team-high 14 assists and Lang and Paulsen had 16 and 10 digs respectively. Clark finished with three block assists.

 

The DMACC volleyball team will face Ellsworth Community College (ECC) in an Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) matchup Oct. 3 at Iowa Falls. DMACC is 3-2 in conference play. ECC is 0-20 overall and 0-5 in the ICCAC.
