DMACC volleyball team sweeps four matches in Waubonsee Tournament

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) volleyball team stayed unbeaten for the season by sweeping four matches in the Waubonsee Tournament August 24 and 25 at Naperville, Ill.

 

The Bears opened tournament play with a 3-1 decision against Muskegon Community College (MCC) on August 24 and handed Henry Ford Community College (HFCC) a 3-0 loss in their second match of the day. On Aug. 25, DMACC was victorious over Madison Community College (MCC), 3-1, and Moraine Valley Community College (MVCC), 3-0.

 

Muskegon Community College entered the tournament ranked 20th in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll and Madison Community College is ranked eighth in the NJCAA Division III poll.

 

The wins give the Bears a 5-0 record for the season.

 

Freshman Amber Dilsaver of Fort Madison had 14 kills and sophomores Madison Paulsen of Council Bluffs and Peyton Parker of La Porte City had 10 kills apiece to lead DMACC past Muskegon Community College, 25-17, 22-25, 25-20, 25-19.

 

Freshman Cailey Schaa of Council Bluffs had 29 assists in the win and sophomore Gill Tupper of Nevada added 18. Freshman Daiton Martin of Essex contributed four ace serves and led DMACC in digs with 37. Paulsen finished with 10 digs and Dilsaver topped the Bears in blocks with five, including three block assists. Freshman Kyra Ikeda of Fairfax had four block assists.

 

Dilsaver and freshman Tahj Haire of Rockford, Ill., had eight kills apiece and Paulsen and Parker finished with six apiece in DMACC's 25-10, 25-15, 25-9 win over HFCC. The Bears had their best hitting match of the season at .349 with their 39 kills coming from 86 attacks with nine hitting errors.

 

Schaa and Tupper led the way in assists with 15 apiece and freshman Keimoney Lang of Iowa City had three ace serves with Tupper and freshman Gretchen Durbala of Burlington getting two ace serves apiece. Martin led the Bears in digs with 12 and Dilsaver led the way in blocks with six, including three block assists. Sophomore Lacey Clark of Bettendorf had four block assists.

 

Paulsen's 13 kills and 12 by Parker led DMACC to a 25-18, 23-25, 25-17, 25-22 win over Madison Community College. The Bears hit .336 in the win, getting 51 kills from 110 attacks with 14 hitting errors. Dilsaver had eight kills, Clark added six and Ikeda and Haire finished with five apiece.

 

Schaa and Tupper again led the way in assists with 23 and 22 respectively. Schaa also had three ace serves with Tupper getting two. Paulsen led three players in double figures in kills with 13. Martin had 12 assists and Lang finished with 10. Clark was the leader in blocks with four block assists.

 

DMACC closed out tournament play with a 25-11, 25-19, 25-16 win over MVCC behind eight kills each from Paulsen and Parker and six by Dilsaver. The Bears hit .260 with their 31 kills coming from 77 attacks with 11 hitting errors.

 

Schaa led DMACC in assists with 15 and Tupper had 12 assists and two ace serves. Martin and Paulsen came away with 14 and 13 digs respectively and Haire had three blocks, including two solo blocks.

 

The DMACC volleyball team opens Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play Aug. 29 against Kirkwood Community College (KCC). The match will begin at 6:30 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. KCC is 4-1 on the season with a three-match winning streak.
