DMACC women's basketball team falls to Iowa Central CC, 64-62

Freshman Riley Gatton of Montezuma scored 20 points and freshman Jada Powell of Des Moines added nine points as the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's basketball team dropped a 64-62 decision to Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) February 22 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

The loss was the 18th of the season for the Bears, who have 10 wins. They slipped to 4-11 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

ICCC led throughout the game. The Tritons were up 17-8 at the end of the first quarter, 30-20 at halftime and 53-44 at the end of the third quarter.

 

DMACC shot 40 percent in the loss, making 24 of 60 field goal attempts. The Bears were 9-of-24 from three-point range and 5-of-8 from the free throw line.

 

ICCC had a 32-26 advantage on the boards with Powell's six rebounds leading DMACC. Freshman Katelyn Courtney of Ames had five rebounds and Gatton, and sophomores Hannah McKinney of Des Moines and Asia Mena of Chicago, Ill., had four rebounds apiece. Mena dished out a team-high nine assists and freshman Emma Mace of Hawarden led the Bears in steals with three. Mena, Courtney and freshman Shelbi Raymond of Madrid had two steals apiece.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will close out the regular season Feb. 26 when the Bears face Southwestern Community College (SWCC) at Creston. SWCC is 13-14 overall and 8-6 in the ICCAC. The Spartans defeated DMACC, 80-50, when the two teams played Jan. 25 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
