DMACC's Jada Powell named NJCAA Athlete of the Week

The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) has named Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's basketball player Jada Powell the NJCAA Athlete of the Week for Division II women's basketball for the week of February 3 to 9.

 

The announcement comes on the heels of the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) naming Powell its Division II Athlete of the Week for Division II women's basketball for the week of Feb. 3 to 9.

 

Powell, a freshman from Des Moines, scored 21 points and grabbed 22 rebounds as the Bears ended an eight-game losing streak with a 104-57 win over Little Priest Tribal (LPT) Feb. 8 inside the DMACC gymnasium. On Feb. 5, Powell had another double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds in a 71-69 loss to Southeastern Community College (SECC), also inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Powell's 17.5 scoring average and 18 rebounding average in those two games boosted her season averages to 9.9 points and 9.8 rebounds a game. She has scored 199 points and pulled down 196 rebounds this season. Powell is shooting 35 percent from the field, having made 82 of 232 field goal attempts. She is 14-of-50 from three-point range and 21-of-47 from the free throw line. Powell's 196 rebounds include 146 defensive rebounds. Her season also includes 23 assists, 19 steals and 12 blocked shots.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team, 9-16 for the season and 3-9 in the ICCAC, faces Ellsworth Community College (ECC) Feb. 15 at Iowa Falls. ECC is 0-23 for the season and 0-11 in the ICCAC.
