DMACC women's basketball team suffers 95-36 loss to KCC

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's basketball team fell to 9-16 for the season and 3-9 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) following a 95-36 loss to Kirkwood Community College (KCC) February 12 at Cedar Rapids.

 

KCC, ranked second in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, led throughout the game. The Eagles were up 17-10 at the end of the first quarter, 45-19 at halftime and 76-19 at the end of the third quarter.

 

Freshman Jada Powell of Des Moines led DMACC with eight points and freshman Riley Gatton of Montezuma and sophomore Taelor Lessmeier of Fort Dodge scored seven points apiece.

 

DMACC shot a disappointing 21 percent in the loss, making 15 of 71 field goal attempts. The Bears were 4-of-41 from three-point range and 2-of-4 from the free throw line.

 

KCC came away with a 57-27 advantage on the boards. Freshman Emma Mace of Hawarden led DMACC with seven rebounds and Powell added six. Sophomores Asia Mena of Chicago, Ill., and Hannah McKinney of Des Moines dished out two assists apiece and Mena led the Bears in steals with two.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team faces Ellsworth Community College (ECC) Feb. 15 at Iowa Falls. ECC is 0-23 for the season and 0-11 in the ICCAC
